I'll rate that which I have heard or own:

    70's:
I know some of the songs but don't have any of the albums.

    80's:
I bought these albums between around 87-90 after Sammy joined VH.
    1) Standing Hampton
    2) VOA – I just played this album through for the first time in a decade. I totally forgot about “Swept Away” – l think I’m more impressed with the song today than in the 80’s. Even “Dick in the Dirt” rocked much more than I remember despite the dicks in the dirt and kissing where it hurts, etc.
    3) Three lock box.
I don't have "goodbye" but I obviously know "Eagles" and "Give". If the rest of the album is like that, I'm good without it.

    Post VH:
I basically bought these as they came out:
    1) ten13 / MTM - tie
    3) Red Voodoo
    4) Livin' it Up - I kinda like Sam I Am but I think this album stinks as a whole. I try to put it on in the summer while drinking/grilling. I still don’t like it probably because I have no use for country. I think back to Sammy’s interview at Farm Aid where he talked about being at a defacto country music festival. He made a big point of saying that he doesn’t do country, he’s a rocker and that’s what he’s gonna play. Then I listen to this album and decide I like 1985 Sammy a lot more than the Livin’ It Up Sammy. That tour with the Other Half kicked arse though.

For some reason, I never got around to buying Not 4 Sale. I know this album has a lot of fans around here and especially the song Karma Wheel. I never bought CUF because I figured it stinks. the song CUF stinks and I don’t need a Sammy cover of the Beasties in my collection.

I consider myself a pretty big Sammy fan but more in the context of Montrose, VH, CF, and his greatest hits from his solo stuff. I don’t think I could be considered a Red Head or anything. I love to listen to Unboxed, Essential, MTM, and Ten13. That’s more than enough for me and I really feel no need to explore an album like Musical Chairs. If someone feels like I’m missing the boat, I wouldn’t mind advice for checking out some of his more obscure stuff.

CUF isn't as bad as your making it out to be. The Planet Us songs on it are pretty damn good. Peeping through a hole is about as mean a sammy as you are ever gonna find. Psycho Vertigo has been around for years but I really like it these days and LOUD is a pretty fun song. I never listen to the beastie boys cover...it's kinda like strung out from balance for me. I have it on my IPOD but have no intention of ever actually listening to it.

Rematch is a good album to own that explores the 70s era albums pretty well. Even if you're not a huge fan of some the songs, "Red", "Trans Am" and the live version of "Bad Motor Scooter" will make it worth it. It's a nice intro to the older stuff.

    Capitol Years:

Danger Zone (I love In to the night and love or money from this disk)

street machine (this planets on Fire is worth the cost alone.)

All Night Long (live CD that really gets sammy at his best, the live extended version of BMS with the guitar duel at the end between Sammy and Gary Phil is worth it for me

    Geffen:

Standing Hampton-Can't get loose is one of my all time favorite songs.

VOA-swept away rocks and I think Don't make me wait is cool as hell.

    I never said goodbye
    3 lock Box

    after VH:

MTM-might be sammy's best solo disk. I still think if VH woulda done half of those songs exactly as they are on this disk they would be smash hits.

Ten 13-I think this is the last disk where sammy went in with a plan and it's awesome. Serious Ju ju sends shivers down my spine to this day when Mike Anthony says "somebody save the world" at the end....I know it's never been proven but I would almost bet my house that's Mike doing that part. Tropic of Capricorn is a very under rated song.

Red voodoo-I like this more and more as time goes by.

Not 4 Sale-not a big fan of this one. there are some great songs but I don't think it's as good as some make it out to be.

CUF-Awesome Planet Us stuff makes this one stand over livin it up.

livin it up-I actually really like sammy's version of Rainy day women but not enough to carry the entire record.

I don't like much of Sam's pre-VH stuff, a few songs here and there, but other than those I think they are pretty derivative stuff.

However, I really like Marching to Mars and Ten 13, great hard rock albums to me, but then each one after that progressively less.

I think Livin' It Up! is just a really bad album, and CUF is not much better.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

I really don't think Sam has tried to do a real album in years. I think the last 2 were just thrown together for Sammy's fans. CUF has 2 live acoustic songs on it, a cover and a couple of vaulted Planet Us tunes.

I just think he releases albums these days for shits n giggles.

Oh, I agree, I think they both may have been full of old tunes he didn't think were good enough to make prior albums, kind of like Led Zeppelin's Coda.

But, just because little effort was involved doesn't make them more listenable.

I like pissed off Sam much better than the Jimmy Buffet vibe he has had going on in recent years. Marching to Mars is Sam pissed off, and I like it!

Listening to Pandora today and heard "Things've Changed" off of "Not For Sale" - I've never heard the song before - it's terrible. It almost sounds like an SNL parody of a John Mellencamp song.

MTM and 10/13 are such great albums from start to end but then you hear a song like this and you really have to scratch your head.

Not 4 Sale is appropriately named, he should have never released it.

That is truly an album for the die-hards. It sounds like crap that he thought wasn't good enough to release and just threw together to put something out.

@ BlindtotheWorld - Things've Changed was written by Jesse Harms, I don't know how much Sam put into it - I'd imagine probably just tweaking it here and there since he gives full credit on the track to Jesse.
