Default When did Sammy have his highest peak?

Going through Sammys big career, i'm gonna say that "5150" was his biggest peak. "OU812" was successful, and same with "F.U.C.K" and "Balance", but there was the fresh-ness about "5150" and it got people talking about Sammy....up till his involvement in Van Halen he was a moderate successful solo artist, but was never a big name so to say. Do you agree?

Not really. "55" put him on the map. I think more people know that song than any of his Halen tunes.

"5150" form a creative standpoint. But then you could even argue the Chickenfoot record is a second peak.

By far, he was at his highest peak in 1988. He was well known prior to joining VH with the release of "55", but after he joined VH and had "5150" under his belt, he was the most well known he had ever been. The 1988 tour was Sammy at his highest point: OU812 was a smash and proved 5150 wasn't a fluke, he was in the biggest band in America with the most buzz at the time, and he was becoming a better song writer working with Eddie.

    1988 is the answer.

I would say '86. Or '86 - '88. Those years were the height of "Van Hagar" , as far as popularity (album sales). You can't get a bigger break than when you are a solo artist and you happen join the most popular American hard rock band, and you can't get much more controversy than when everyone is debating how you are filling the shoes of their old frontman, who was the most popular hard rock frontman on earth at that time.

Although "55" was a hit - his biggest hit at the time - that was nothing compared to joining VAN-freaking-HALEN! It probably felt to him like he just joined the Beatles, which even he said during an interview at the time.

I don't think 5150 was his peak. People were still feeling him out for fit (or making their respective integrity stands ), and the comparisons continued until Monsters of Rock when it finally died down some.

I'd say it's a toss-up between his current post-20th century RedHead fanbase with the Wabos and Chickenfoot, and the '91 - '92 FUCK era with VH. Not commercially obviously, but in terms of pop culture zeitgeist, a zenith of fanbase and industry/fellow artist respect.

There's no question that 55 put Sammy on the map for the mainstream, but I also think it was his presence in VH with 5150 that really legitimized who he was.

But whether or not that was his peak....I don't think so. I'd lean more towards the FUCK time period. FUCK really established him as a household name and gained him the respect as a true member of VH. FUCK really solidified his reputation and career.

It would had to of been Montrose.
Without that band he would not have gotten the solo recording deal that lead to 55 & VH.

The op is asking when Sam's career peaked. It did not peak with Montrose.

Sorry for that late late night post.
Than I would have to say 1996,that was the year Hagar came out with Cabo Wabo.
Having someone like Athony Dias Blue calling it one of the Top 3 tequilas in the world is just huge. That type of exposure just can't be compared to the small world of rock&roll.

This might not answer the original question properly, but for me, 1997 & Marching To Mars would be Sam's highest peek. He fell out of VH and totally landed on his feet running. Great album with some of his best vocals ever. He was nobody's fool and he used that leverage to produce some quality product... in quick time.

I Don't care if it sold well or if there was even a tour for it, but as a stand alone piece of music, MTM is a very high point in Sam's kick ass career.

    Definitely 2011! Bring it on!!!

Career-wise it would have to be the latter part of the 80's. Musically, I love the turn of the millennium for Hagar. 1013 and Not 4 Sale, back to back, it doesn't get much better than that in my opinion, and to come at the twilight of his career, just amazing.

And it was all him. When you've got EVH behind you writing incredible music, it seems a given you are going to put out strong albums with that band, but for Hagar to bring those two albums (1013 and NFS) at that time, writing a lot of those songs himself, just amazing. That's his musical peak as far as I'm concerned.

I think it was about the time that Carnal Knowledge came out.
