Live Nation counts on concert warhorses to revive ticket sales next year

Singer Christina Aguilera performsduring the Grammy Nominations Concert on December 3, 2008.CAPTIONBy Jewel Samad, AFP/Getty ImagesThe concert business will end 2010 on a sour note, Live Nation Executive Chairman Irving Azoff told analysts today.

"We're still not seeing a consumer recovery" in ticket sales, after a summer when revenues declined, Azoff said at a meeting organized by Liberty Media. Liberty owns 14% of Live Nation, the No. 1 owner of concert halls and, with Ticketmaster, an e-commerce powerhouse.

Next year may improve, he said, as hitmakers who sat on the sidelines in 2010 plan major tours. He's especially optimistic that the cast of the TV show Glee, Van Halen, Avril Lavigne, Christina Aguilera, and Fleetwood Mac will fill arenas and ampitheaters.

But Live Nation hopes to boost its profits by upselling consumers -- encouraging people who buy concert tickets to also spring for the performer's recorded music, a DVD of the concert, T-shirts, ringtones, posters, books, and banners.

"We intend to become the Amazon of the music business," Azoff said.

He joked about, but shed no light on, reports that a board-level power struggle prompted Barry Diller to announce this week that he's resigning as Live Nation's chairman. Diller said that he planned to leave a year after helping Live Nation and Ticketmaster to merge. Azoff went to Twitter to say that the press reports are "ridiculous."

I have no sympathy for LiveNation/Ticketmaster. This coming weekend, I am driving an hour each way to pick up a pair of tickets in person because it is $40 cheaper than buying them online, even with gas money factored in.

And I know that Azoff's high hopes for a 2011 Van Halen tour don't guarantee a 2011 Van Halen tour, but it's nice to hear that idea bouncing around again.
Van Halen will rock your face off!

The reason he mentions Van Halen first is not that he's jonesing to hear "Girl Gone Bad" or "Drop Dead Legs"...

He also manages them, so he stands to profit on both ends.

I would buy a DVD of the concert if VH could get their shit together and actually put one out!

Also, VH better drop their prices a bit if they want to fill up arenas.

I just paid 136.00 list from Ticketbastard in March to see Bon Jovi in the rafters. I was about 2 feet from the ceiling at the Verizon Center in DC. I had never seen Bon Jovi so what the fuck. I can only imagine what a 2011 VH tour will cost. I don't do crappy seats when VH in any form tours, but I'am not going to pay a grand for the first 20 rows. I may be done with live concerts.

I agree on both fronts. I'm willing to spend money to see them live multiple times, but not when a seat averages $80 a ticket. That's just stupid. Drop the prices and you'll see more enthusiastic crowds. You won't get the "I paid $180 for these seats, entertain me bitch" attitude that most of those seats' patrons have--which is drag on the rest of the crowd.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

    Guys-
I'm almost done with concerts due to the people I get stuck sitting next to. You should check out the Roger Waters videos I shot just to hear these goons. I'm trying to film Another Brick in the Wall, Pt 2, and this hillbilly I got stuck sitting next to, in his drunken glory, is all excited and keeps trying to talk to me. HEY, I came to see a show, not talk to you! I move down a few rows, and I have the Real (drunken) Housewives of Pittsburgh, screaming at Roger Waters to "TAKE ME HOME!!!" Sigh...at least the Rush show wasn't like that (aside from having to see my ex GF approximately 8 rows back stare at me, which made for an uncomfortable night).

Heres my Another Brick in the Wall:

And the Drunken chicks screaming "Take me HOME!!!"

Irving Azoff is a scum fucker who only wants to rape and pillage people for their money. He's the bastard that engineered the $100.00+ concert ticket. Remember when the Eagles reformed in 1994 and charged $100.00 for a ticket? He's the one that was behind that whole entire scam. It's been nothing but high concert ticket prices since then.

I hope he goes down in flames, along with his company. It's about time that people just say "No" to the insane pricing of concert tickets. I've done it and have no regrets.
