    Default First Musical Instrument

    Hey all,

So my son just turned 3 and we're thinking of buying him a kids drum set since he seems to like one that a friend of ours has. Is this too young for the drums? If so, is there another instrument that you'd recommend. He plays on papa's keyboard some but his hands are still too small to get much out of that. Any recommendations?

Dude, piano. There are some teachers that will start them as young as 3. It's truly the best way to start him down a musical road. If you don't think he's ready for lessons and you're just looking for an instrument for him to have fun on, then go for the drums.

A dad that wants his kid to have a drum set. How cool.

Never too young to get started Mike.

The piano is the building block of music. If he can get the piano down, he can play anything.

+1 Piano is a great springboard for just about everything.
Drums are a great instrument, but like Andrew said drums are easier to pick up and have fun with, but piano just offers so much in terms of ear training and learning the fundamentals of timing. From my perspective: Get a digital piano with a weighted keyboard. Yamaha's are awesome They don't cost a lot these days, and If his hands are still really too small, you can get some with mini keys, (3/4 size) though it's better in the long run to go conventional size. That will get the fingers stronger, and help develop a spread.
    Perfect for guitar!!!!!

Frankly at 3 IMO as a parent, I wouldn't worry about it. Just get him what he wants.

They just aren't old enough at that age to put in the kind of effort at that age to really learn music, they just don't have that attention span to stick with it either. My daughter at 5 1/2 is hardcore into ballet and tap dancing and goes to class weekly, but it was her decision. Now she wants to sing in the choir at school, so we'll let her do that. These are things she wants to do, not things mommy and daddy made her do.

I really think you're making a mistake if you make music more of a chore at that age. If he wants to bang around on drums, let him, he's 3. You can encourage him into something else when he's a little older if you feel the need. My parents wanted me to take piano lessons, but I was 8. There's a big difference between 3 and 8. BTW I hated piano and I'm not sure I even got that much from it when I turned to guitar. But that's me.

For me, learning to play the piano first was a god-send, as I have gone on to play multiple instruments as my interests have changed throughout my life.

Learning how to read sheet music and learning both the treble and bass clef has been very beneficial to me.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

thanks for the tips guys. We do have a keyboard in the house and he'll play on that just for fun so he has some exposure to piano and I can teach him the basics once he gets old enough to understand it.

He seems to really like the drums though (he runs to them at a friends house whenever we're there) and come to think of it, that's one of the instruments he takes to on my keyboard. Just wanted to get a feel for any experiences any of you may had as kids or with your kids. I'm not the type to pressure him into anything, if he likes it then I'll do whatever I can to get him lessons and stuff. But I'm not the type to push kids into anything - that seems to backfire from what I've seen.

    thanks again guys.

I have had several music instructors work for me over the last 20 years or so. The more successful ones preferred that the child be able to read and use the bathroom by themselves. Made sense to me.

Get him the drums. Got 'em for my son when he was four.

Yeah, I wanted to add that I think three is way early for lessons, I was a lot older when I started, but I am very thankful that I got piano lessons.
