Default Here is Gibson's Top 50 Guitar solo's of all time for debate

JIMMY PAGE AND EDDIE VAN HALEN TOP 'GREATEST GUITAR SOLO' LIST

    9/29/2010

Jimmy Page's 1971 solo to Led Zeppelin's "Stairway To Heaven" topped the Gibson.com list of the "Top 50 Guitar Solos Of All Time." Coming in at Number Two is Eddie Van Halen's 1978 groundbreaking instrumental "Eruption" from Van Halen's self-titled debut, with Jimi Hendrix's solo on his 1968 cover of Bob Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower" rounding out the Top Three.

Hendrix made the list four times -- the most of any guitarist. Eric Clapton scored three times with solos for tracks with Cream, the Beatles, and Derek & the Dominoes. In addition to his runner-up spot with "Eruption," Van Halen's 1982 solo on Michael Jackson's "Beat It" came in at Number 50.

Jimmy Page -- whose solos to Led Zeppelin's "Since I've Been Loving You," "Heartbreaker," and "Whole Lotta Love" also made the list -- says that after all the success Led Zeppelin had, the real reward has been that the music has lasted so well: "The most satisfying, the most rewarding part of it, is having been part of music like that, which has stood up to the test of time. Every musician hopes that their music will hold up. And it's wonderful."

Peter Frampton has been close friends with Page since the mid-1960s. He frequently watched Zeppelin record in the early '70s at London's Olympic Studios, while taking breaks from his own recordings and was consistently impressed with Jimmy Page's guitar technique: "He's a very well-rounded player. His technique on acoustic is phenomenal. And he uses various different open tunings. He tunes his guitar down and there's a special 'Jimmy Page' tuning (laughs) that he uses on a lot of the stuff."

These lists would be better if only one entry/artist was allowed.

The solo to "Stairway To Heaven" gets way too much love from these guys. That particular solo has never done anything for me.

Pretty solid but a bit troubled by the absence of Satch, Vai or any Schenkers (Scorpions, UFO, MSG - plenty of choice). Also if you're talking purely solos, notwithstanding the song quality, then maybe even Vito Bratta should be in there:

For Ritchie Blackmore there're some great solos on "child in time" or " you fool no one" or "smoke on the water" better than "highway star"!

they judje only the solo or all the guitar' work?

I glanced at this thread and I thought for a second that it said "Mel Gibson's Top 50 Guitar solo's of all time"

    Thought that was kinda funny.

I don't think that this list was written by a group of people that were angling for the technical merits of guitar solos. Rather, more of list of memorable solos that anyone who has functioning hearing could recognize.

As much as I dig Satch, Vai and Schenker, there really isn't much that they've written that has been etched into the brains of the masses. Especially Vito Bratta, who although he could run circles around 99% of those guitar players listed, I don't think many people could name a song, let alone a solo, that he's done.

The only things I disagree with on this list......

    - "Sweet Child" - one of the most overplayed and overrated rock songs ever. "November Rain"'s solo blows it clean away and then goes after its family.

    - "Comfortably Numb" should have been at least #1 or #2. Gilmour fucking shatters the heavens with that solo.

    And finally....
    - Alex Lifeson's solo on "Limelight" should have been somewhere on the list.
