Default ‘Great Recession’ over, research group says

The “Great Recession” has ended, officially.

At least, that's the word from the private, nonprofit research organization that calls the beginnings and endings of recessions, the National Bureau of Economic Research.

The NBER said Monday that the recession which began in December 2007 ended in June 2009, which marked the beginning of an expansion. The announcement rules out the possibility of a so-called “double-dip” recession, because any new downturn would be seen as a brand new recession.

Looks like Obama did fix it. I wonder when all these lazy ass people on unemployment are going to get the memo and get back to work.

If what we have experienced over the past year was growth than me beating off last night was the same as a threesome with Katy Perry and that hot Mexican reporter.

Not according to my last financial statement.

Clearly, it only takes 2 years to undo 8-30 years of narcissistic economic policies.

the recession is over. The financial problems we (gov't) have won't be solved in any of our lifetimes.

Maybe in Canada but it ain't over here. 10 percent unemployment is not a sign of recovery. What bizarre statistics are you looking at?

While I know our government policies have failed to a degree over our lifetimes, its really we the people that have failed due to our greed. Back when my parents got married in the late 50's, you were lucky to have a TV or a car, let alone a 1000 square foot house. Now we have numerous TV's, cars and houses that double or triple that most likely with a 2nd mortgage. When you add computers, gaming systems, cell phones, designer clothes and various other gadgets it was inevitable that we would overextend ourselves.

Surely most people honestly knew that they couldn't afford a 300,000 dollar house yet when they saw those low interest rates they couldn't resist. They were the fools to not realize that they were variable and most likely would increase. I mean there how naive were people to think that institutions that lend money are not in the business of making money? However greed prompted people to make deals they really should have known were too good to be true.

We wanted cheaper electronic equipment so none of us really put up a fight when our industry base decided to move overseas so they could provide us with cheaper material goods. Now our economy is driven by the selling of commercial goods and our manufacturing base is gone.

If people want this cycle to end, the solution is no different than what one would do at home. Stop spending and try to pay off the debt. Become more frugal with money and think about "what to do I need" rather than "what do I want?" Unfortunately the current Administration failed to see this by continuing the trend of spend, spend spend.

This has been going on all throughout my lifetime yet people are sheep and vote along party lines without holding anybody they elect accountable unless they are from the opposing party.

If we can't be take care of ourselves and we continually vote the same old people in office, what makes you think they will be able to do a better job?

Here in my county we are still hanging out between 16 and 17 percent unemployment...there are those who I know who have said their jobs are more on the line now than they were at the beginning of the year.

your GDP has grown for the past year. Not exactly a bizarre stat when calling the end of a recession.
