Default White House: Global Warming Out, 'Global Climate Disruption' In

From the administration that brought you "man-caused disaster" and "overseas contingency operation," another terminology change is in the pipeline.

The White House wants the public to start using the term "global climate disruption" in place of "global warming" -- fearing the latter term oversimplifies the problem and makes it sound less dangerous than it really is.

White House science adviser John Holdren urged people to start using the phrase during a speech last week in Oslo, echoing a plea he made three years earlier. Holdren said global warming is a "dangerous misnomer" for a problem far more complicated than a rise in temperature.

The call comes as Congress prepares to adjourn for the season without completing work on a stalled climate bill. The term global warming has long been criticized as inaccurate, and the new push could be an attempt to re-shape climate messaging for next year's legislative session.

"They're trying to come up with more politically palatable ways to sell some of this stuff," said Republican pollster Adam Geller, noting that Democrats also rolled out a new logo and now refer to the Bush tax cuts as "middle-class tax cuts."

U.S. Navy limiting use of 'Cyclone' patrol boatsGeithner Steps up China Yuan Policy CriticismTen Worst Places to LivePresident Changes Tune on Health-Care CostsThe UAW Still Doesn't Get ItHe said the climate change change-up likely derives from flagging public support for their bill to regulate emissions. He said the term "global warming" makes the cause easy to ridicule whenever there's a snowstorm.

"Every time we're digging our cars out -- what global warming?" he said. "(Global climate disruption is) more of a sort of generic blanket term, I guess, that can apply in all weather conditions."

It's unclear why Holdren prefers "global climate disruption" over "climate change," the most commonly used alternative to "global warming."

Asked about the speech, Holdren spokesman Rick Weiss said only that the Office of Science and Technology Policy has been transparent about Holdren's remarks.

"The PowerPoint for Dr. Holdren's Oslo presentation has been public on our website since the day after he returned," he said.

In a 2007 presentation, Holdren suggested a similar phrase change -- "global climatic disruption."

The explanation he gave last week was that the impact from greenhouse gas emissions covers a broad "disruption" of climate patterns ranging from precipitation to storms to hot and cold temperatures. Those changes, he said, affect the availability of water, productivity of farms, spread of disease and other factors.

He's not the first scientist to publicly veer away from "global warming." NASA published an analysis on its website in 2008 explaining that it avoids the term because temperature change "isn't the most severe effect of changing climate."

"Changes to precipitation patterns and sea levels are likely to have much greater human impact than the higher temperatures alone," the report said.

But Republicans predicted that re-branding the issue would have limited effect on the legislative effort. GOP strategist Pete Snyder said he doubts the term is going to change hearts and minds.

"Are they going to change the name of weathermen to disruption analysts?" he quipped. GOP lawmakers already exploited a terminology change of their own by re-branding the "cap-and-trade" bill as "cap-and-tax."

Holdren's "global climate disruption" isn't the most convoluted term to grace the climate debate, however.

According to the NASA article, early studies on the impact humans had on global climate referred to the relationship as "inadvertent climate modification."
"Watch what people are cynical about, and one can often discover what they lack. -- Gen. George S. Patton

'Global Climate Disruption' has been around since long before man became part of the scene. Anyone with a grade school education learned about the ice ages. Hey, it had to warm up in between, right?

I don't find fault in people wanting to keep from polluting the Earth but to think they are helping the climate by doing so is just foolish.

Watering, fertilizing, aerating and mowing the lawn; dredging creeks and rivers; planting and pruning of trees and bushes; damning rivers; replacing sand of eroded beaches; sand bagging homes and buildings for hurricanes/floods.

....all things that disrupt the natural climate.

Hell...human beings EXISTING disrupt the climate. I guess we need to exterminate ourselves for the good of the Earth.

Exactly. I think we should try to do all that is feasibly possible to stop the pollution since we have to live with it (anyone seen the air quality in Beijing lately) but in the end, I really don't know how much effect it will have in truly reducing what the earth is going to do.

I think the bigger benefit will be preserving our natural resources. Making energy efficient cars, homes, business, etc will make what we have last a lot longer while making our environment more pleasant to live in.
Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we might as well dance.

Default They say "Global Climate Disruption".,,, I say BULLSHIT

I've seen a lot of data lately which indicates that increased Co2 levels are actually a RESULT of rising temperatures, not the cause of it. Temperatures rise AND THEN the C02 rises, not the other way around. Arctic core samples show that there's a lag of about 800 years between when temperatures rise and Co2 follows. Not the other way around.

Al Gore and the rest of these dimwits got it backwards. It's fearmongering crap to take us all to the bank. Fuck Cap and Trade (Cap and Tax), and fuck Obama's clean energy bill and their Cap-and-Tax agenda. It's a scam. Don't believe the hype.

I say, screw nature. Again, going under Axx'es "fuck everyone" policy. If evolution created humans, then it's nature's own fault and responsibility. If God created humans, then everything is going just how he/she/[classified] wants it. I don't see anything wrong with what people do - all those ice ages, vulcano eruptions and hurricanes had killed more life forms than humans would ever will.
We cut some trees and drain some oil - so what? I'm sure nature/God created all those physical qualities to the matter to make electricity and jet engines possible just at random. So I'll just keep on drinking my OJ from a plastic bottle, listen to some metalcore thru my micro-processor run laptop, and let nature/God do their own thing. Without humans, this world is boring as fuck.

Yes. Screw the vast majority opinion of the scientific community and all their so-called data and evidence. And Iraq was behind 911 too.

Wow good link there ziggy! Thank you for creating a false equivalency between JunkScience.com's Steven J. Millroy, a portfolio manager of a libertarian mutual fund and long time columnist for FOX news, with RealClimate.com's NASA scientists, PhD's in applied mathematics, and all those liberal scientists who are just looking for more grant money so they do research and stuff. I'm sure Millroy has no such vested interest!

Hopefully you'll find us some more good links to guys who used to be weathermen but now make simplistic Drudge style websites promoting the advancement of free enterprise polluters.

What's so hilarious about all the deniers is that their arguments are only circular. This about sums them up:
