Default Montrose=first successful American hard rock band of all-time?

Wouldn't Montrose be considered the FIRST successful AMERICAN hard-rock band? I always wanted to see everyone's opinion on this pretty big topic that never seems to be mentioned. Everybody before them--Led Zeppelin, The Who, Cream, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath--was British, even Jimi Hendrix's band doesn't count because he's the only American. Actually, the hard rock-bordering Aerosmith I guess just beats them by a few months in 1973? Kiss was '74 right? Fuck, maybe Skynyrd would technically be? They're late '60s aren't they?

Well Sammy Hagar and Montrose were close enough I guess.

I thought of this reading the liner notes in "The Essential Red Collection" when someone (Nugent was it?) said they could be considered the first American heavy metal act or something along those lines.

    "Hard rock bordering Aerosmith"?

Dude, those early albums are all balls. It wasn't until Permanent Vacation in '87 that they started pussifying their music.

I recall having a discussion with an
older dude at work on a similar topic...

And he mentioned Grand Funk Railroad being
the badess band in the land in the states in the
early 70's,said they sold out madison square garden,
and the pontiac silver dome and other places
in record time....Maybe even before Zeppelin did.

I guess they can be classified as a hard rock band.
Other than a few tunes,im no expert on GFR.
Maybe someone here can enlighten us on all things Funk

If not Aerosmith, there's CCR, Grand Funk, ZZ Top, the James Gang and others that were pretty active in the whole evolution from blues rock to heavy metal before Montrose. Debating this inevitably slides down the slippery slope of what is hard rock and what isn't? As its singer, songwriter and lead guitarist, you could also argue that Jimi Hendrix' Experience was a pretty seminal hard rock band with significant American roots. Certainly something like Purple Haze or Voodoo Chile was a helluva lot more seminal than Rock Candy or Bad Motor Scooter.

And this is before many of our times, but exactly how successful was Montrose?

Not meant as a dig, because popularity does not always coincide with quality.

Just seems that if Sammy wasn't still popular, they would never even get mentioned.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Honestly, Montrose was never mentioned in any other capacity beyond "Yeah, Sam used to be the singer in Montrose."

Today was the first day I have ever heard a Montrose song. I YouTubed Rock Candy and Bad Motor Scooter so I could finally say "i've heard a montrose song."

I honestly have no clue how big they were and among who they were big. I do know that, at least in my life, people (other than linkers) are hardpressed to name a Montrose song.
    Stay out of it, dude.

Well a lot of people in the hard rock industry are fans--not so much the general public and being a household name. A good amount of artists have covered their songs, namely Iron Maiden (3 different times). I would say they are more "acclaimed" than popular.
