Default Obama, the global weapons market, and jobs for America

Obama's new jobs plan calls for the largest arms deal in US history. Israel doesn't like the idea of the US arming Saudi Arabia with $60 billion worth of modern US weaponry, but US officials say that Israel shouldn't mind since we're selling them new weapons too.

Obama's new arms deal with Saudi Arabia is being sold to the American people and congress largely as a job stimulus program.

    Saudi Arms Deal Advances
Obama approves $60 billion arms deal... one year after winning Nobel Peace Prize

The Obama administration is set to notify Congress of plans to offer advanced aircraft to Saudi Arabia worth up to $60 billion, the largest U.S. arms deal ever, and is in talks with the kingdom about potential naval and missile-defense upgrades that could be worth tens of billions of dollars more.

The administration plans to tout the $60 billion package as a major job creator—supporting at least 75,000 jobs, according to company estimates—and sees the sale of advanced fighter jets and military helicopters to key Middle Eastern ally Riyadh as part of a broader policy aimed at shoring up Arab allies against Iran.

The prospect for job growth could help build support in Congress for the $60 billion package, officials said. "It's a big economic sale for the U.S. and the argument is that it is better to create jobs here than in Europe," said one person close to the talks.

Pro-Israel lawmakers have voiced concerns in the past about arms sales to Saudi Arabia that they say may undercut Israel's military edge and provide support to a government with a poor human rights record.

U.S. officials say the Israelis are increasingly comfortable with the Saudi sale because the planes won't have certain long-range weapons systems. Also, the Israelis are in line to buy a more advanced fighter, the F-35, and should begin to receive them around the same time the Saudis are expected to start getting the F-15s.

    Creating jobs:
Barack Obama has faced mounting pressure over rising unemployment in the U.S. and the arms deal could create 75,000 posts.

    Couldn't find a video...

    From "Head Office"

Max Landsberger: Since the 1984 oil discovery in New Guinea, we have sold the Bu!kais hill tribesmen 20 of our S-24 fighters. At $21 million per unit, that's $252 million. This has started a local arms race between the Bu!kais, and their local neighbors the Kla!klalas. Now the Kla!klalas also happen to be sitting an a large amount of oil. And now the Kla!klalas want to buy 20 of our new Slash X-Ray Ultra Pursuit fighters for a total of $480 million.

Pete Helmes: What are the chances of war between them?

Bob Nixon: Very good sir. Our spare parts replacement contracts could be very lucrative.

Pete Helmes: Who trains their flight personnel?

Max Landsberger: Well, as near as we can assess it... well, they don't actually fly the planes. They sort of roll them down hills, crashing them into each other.

Scott Dantley: Personally, I think that it's a shameful waste of incredible kill power.

    Pete Helmes: Make the deal.

    Bob Nixon, Scott Dantley: Absolutely.
    Your favorite band sucks.

I don't have a problem with this. It is one of the few areas where the gub'mint can help the private sector and everyone wins. The Saudis have had F-15s for 30 years without a problem.

Face it, why not put some of our oil money back in our own pockets? If the Saudis can't buy our toys the French, Swedish, Russians, or Chinese will be more than happy to take that money.

That is as long as there is no "Islamic regime change" in Saudi Arabia...

U can't really blame Obama as this has been going on for decades, with both republican and democratic administration selling them weapons.

This is more to protect Saudi Arabia from Iran than Israel. I can fault the idiot for a lot of things but not on this. The Saudi's actually in private can exist with Israel with no problems. However they have to maintain the status quo in public for obvious reasons.

The Saudi regime you mean. There are no opinion polls over there and no election. They oppress their people way worse than Iraq ever did, so I don't see why they should be considered an ally. The previous Republican administration was all about establishing democracy everywhere, but strangely the dictatorship of Saudi Arabia never came up in the discussion... odd!

While there may very well be oppression in Saudi Arabia, I don't think they are doing any ethnic cleansing and digging mass graves to bury thousands of people, dropping chemical weapons into villages of their own people, torturing Olympic athletes who do not perform well, etc. etc. How can you possibly say they are worse than Iraq?

But at a price of 60 billion dollars?
    Is Iran really that powerful?
Sorry but this deal to me sounds like it sucks,it'll do nothing but start a brand new middle Eastern arms race.

Why is Iran even in question? The only thing Saudis would need to fight Iran would be Iran attacking Saudis - US would to all their job for them just like they did with Kuwait. Honestly, as if not?

If you were the US government, would you miss the chance to earn $60bil and help out the domestic job market? Especially if it's 3 decades old planes that I'm sure are going to be scrapped by the end of the 10's anyway.

I don't want to hear about "Oppressive Regimes" any more.

The world is clearly cool with them. The days of sanctions and regime change are over because they make people feel bad, fuck the what the oppressed feel. Then when you free the oppressed they fucking bitch at their liberators because they don't approve of the way that they were free'd.

Fuck everyone. Sell the Saudis F-15s until they have so many in the air that glaciers form over Mecca because they block out the sun.

The oppressed can suck on it.

I actually laughed at "fuck everyone part" - good thing noone was in the staff room at the time, I'd just have appeared deranged lmao. And I totally agree with Ax on this - if it's actually good for the country (not Saudis obviously), then I say go for it Obama.
