Default How Much Money Do We Need to Be Happy? Just $75,000?

People say money doesn't buy happiness. Except, according to a new study from Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School, it sort of does — up to about $75,000 a year. The lower a person's income falls below that benchmark, the unhappier he or she feels. But no matter how much more than $75,000 people make, they don't report any greater degree of happiness.

I think that's about right. My income is higher than that, but not by a lot, and I'm pretty happy with my life. Sure, there are a few material things that I would like that are just out of my reach, but overall I seem to be able to get whatever I want and am quite happy living within my means. I think the key is to stay out of debt, especially credit card debt and lines of credit, and live within your means. With the exception of a home and a vehicle, if you don't have the money to buy it, you shouldn't be getting it on credit. That's been key for me, I'm not saddled with debt really.

Man, in my area (Washington DC) I can't imagine trying to live on $75K.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

I know how we can settle this.

Everyone pitch in and give me 75k in cash right now and I'll tell you if it makes me happy or not.

I agree with this 100%. I think debt has more to do with unhappiness than how much you bring home. Whether you make 20 or 200K, if you live within your means, I think that goes a long way toward happiness.

And around here $75K is really good money. Most people around here probably make less than $25K.

It's crazy, but you can also buy a decent house around here for $50K to $75K and can probably rent a really nice house for around $500-$700 a month.

I pay $350 for a small 3 br, 2 bath house on about a half acre in town. The outside of it looks like shit (keeps the taxes low), but the roof/interior has been completely redone.

Of course, if I made $75K, I probably would upgrade to a nicer crib!

I wish the cost of living here in Shreveport was that low. I swear, it's like living upper Manhattan NYC, around here.

I make a good amount more than the $75K, and in Eastern PA we are able to live pretty well on that- had a new home built, wife doesn't have to work (can be home with the kids), etc. The key to MY happiness however would be for me to actually KEEP most of the money I earn and not have it wasted on gov't pork barrel projects and unnecessary foreign wars.

You know, I've been thinking about quitting my job and letting people like you support me while I sit on my ass and drink beer and smoke cigarettes all day while watching porn on my VCR.

Lord knows after the 1st of the year, you'll be paying out more for my cause.

Hey I say to go for it, and I might even join your cause. I've been trying to get a band back together and I don't have any time to practice guitar. Your porn is only on VHS tape? Actually there was some great stuff on tape back in the 80's...
