    Default On Fire

I have always felt this song was so overshadowed on VH I because of all the hits on that album, but "On Fire" has to be the rawest kick-ass song VH ever did. You can really tell their attitude in that song. It just has that we-own-this-industry-whether-you-know-it-or-not feel to it. You can tell that VH knew they were big time, even if the rest of the world didn't know it yet.

Couple things I've always loved about the song:

    - The breakdown in the song (starts about 1:10) below. That guitar song is just so raw it makes you load your drawers.

    - The scream from Dave around 1:46. It's just so primal and angry, much beyond anything he ever laid down in a track subsequently.

    - I've never quite liked the chorus as much as the rest of the song, but Jesus, Mikey is killing it on those high notes!

Atomic Punk has always been my favorite VH song. On Fire is right up there. Raw, heavy old school Van Halen. They opened with this on some of the 1978 boots I have. I think they opened with it in 81 also.

I dont think dave can do those high screams anymore, it could be an embarrasment.

I'm not a big fan of the song personally. Seems out of place to me.

This is a prime example of a song I wouldn't want to hear without Michael Anthony.

On Fire is a great song that Ted Templeman turned into a spectacular song.

It wouldn't be an embarassment, DLR is a professional singer. He would lower it an octave and make it more of a growl than a scream.

Most bands that cover the song do the same thing, as very few singers can hit those notes.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

I used to ignore and skip this track but "rediscovered" it a few years ago.

/agree with the sentiments about "the scream." Before Dave lets that out, the raw energy being blasted out by Eddie, Mike and Alex seems like an unmatchable force -- and then Dave just rips out this scream of all SCREAMS...

    Kick ass.

    This whole album is priceless.

the bass in this song is some of the best bass on a vh recording. Mike sure heats it up on this one.

Best way to finish the first album IMO. The agression in the song and the way it fades out over the "I'm on fiiire" hook. For me that is a perfect lead out after the car horns lead in to RWTD.
