    My Rasta - Ratt Halen

So I was fooling around at practice with some goofy Ratt shit and my singer asked me to record the riffs for him. So whatever I did it real fast, played them wrong probably and sent them to him. Did it on the VH Rasta I finished a few months back, which is like the only guitar I pick up anymore it plays so nice.

Anyway, when I was done I was listening back to what I did to laugh at it, and I noticed that the tone was pretty damn close to that sound Ed had pre-VH 1. And honestly I've never even gotten a tone like that before on any of my other guitars, even ones that have EVH pickups. At least not like this.

So thought I'd share for no particular reason at all.

And maybe I'm crazy at what I'm hearing too. I was listening on headphones.

No it's my Pod X3. If I could get my 5150 to sound like that, I'd be fucking thrilled.

Yes it's an EVH Franky in there.

I would like to take a look at your 5150 Brett. Mine sounds as good if not better than the pod. I guess it is hard to compare a Peavey 5150 to a pod though. Cool classic licks you got goin on there!

What I really meant was is I can't make a 5150 have that kind of early VH sound.

Sounds amazing man! On the 5150, have you tried the 12au7 swap in the V-5 preamp position? I've mentioned it a couple times, but I'm tellin' ya, it made a hell of a lot of difference in mine. I got so tired of the buzzsaw tone and hiss, that I put it in storage for a couple of years, then when i was getting my Marshall serviced, I got to talking to the tech about the 5150, and he suggested swapping that 12ax7 for the 12au7. It was night and day. Mine is an original blockletter too. I use Ruby power tubes, and all JJ in the preamp. Tames the buzzsaw sound, cuts a lot of the hiss and the whole amp just sounds warmer. Still has great harmonics. I was amazed at the results by just switching a tube out.

Sleeper I'm gonna swap that and try it. Worth a shot. Thanks for the suggestion.

When I get home I can post the patch it's nothing crazy. I can tell you that patch has never sounded near that good on any other guitar for whatever reason.

Yeah! Just keep in mind that the "U" in the tube code is the gain rating. if you check on some forums, you'll see the codes: 12au7, 12ay7, even 12at7. I use the U with my Ruby's/JJ's and the preamp gain is much more adjustable with more classic warmth, but some guys say the Y works best with Tung Sol's or GT's for them.
I use neither of those brands, so can't say one way or the other.
In another forum, some switch out two or three of the preamp tubes with an alternate, and they get even more success to the tone their looking for, but I find just the one in V-5 gives me the balance that works best. Just remember to let the tube burn in for a bit in standby.
    Good luck!
