Default Panama and Sucka in a 3 Piece

Listen to both these songs one after the other. I find them to be very similar and even the lyrical melody and choruses are similar.

I think Panama is certainly the better tune. Which got me thinking, Sucka was considered as an almost throw away on OU812 by many people and Panama was a great triumph on 1984. Why? It has to go beyond the fact that one was done before the other. No one hailed Sucka as a back to the basics, rockin’ VH. I really believe that this is just another example of the band trying to avoid their past and people not being able to get over the loss of DLR. Sucka wasn’t even released as a single although the songs are of similar style but Panama was a great single with a really cool video.

Any thoughts? (If some people think Sucka is garbage, please elaborate.)

both great songs, they are pretty similar, even drum beat is the same.
with Everybody Wants Some I've always felt the same thing.

I LOVE "Sucka...". Just as the whole album is underrated, so is that particular song. GREAT groove and great guitar tone...

CRANK it and you'll see what I mean...

Panama is better, and I can't quite tell you why, but I can give it a shot.

First, Panama is a bit simpler and you feel like you know where it's going before it gets there: a true sign of a hit.

Second, the sound quality. Panama just sounds BIGGER. Part of it is the mix, part of it is the attitude, although Sammy gives Sucka his all.

Third, the breaks right before the chorus on Panama make all the difference. Those three notes are like a countdown. Like a signal telling you to hold onto your balls, because the songs is about to rip them off through your throat.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

I agree with everything you wrote. I think my related but bigger question is why the band chose to almost de-emphasize those types of heavier and more classic sounding songs in the Hagar years? Was it a matter of selling out and pushing the ballads and synth powered tunes to reach a wider audience?

Van Hagar certainly changed direction from the classic line-up but they didn't totally puss out either. But based on the singles they released, you'd think they did.

As an example, if the Best of Volume I was your only exposure to Van Halen, it would give you the wrong impression of Van Hagar's total body of work (BOBW didn't do much better).

Although Sucka is inferior to Panama, I think it still captures the true VH approach to a kick-in-the-balls rock song. It's just a shame that no one ever heard it on the radio or MTV.

I think OU812 was very under rated. The reason is simple- the mixing was terrible. The album sounds flat with no bass. If it had been mixed properly, Sucka would've gotten the recognition it deserved.

Perhaps at some point in the future, it will finally be mixed properly and we will hear the incredible magic that was Van Halen of that time.

I think it was just Ed's writing style. He always wrote that kind of stuff but Dave (perhaps wisely) turned those pieces down in favor of the heavier stuff. Apparently Ed wrote Right Now years before and Dave didn't think he could do anything with it. I mean, can you picture Dave singing on Dreams, Love Walks In, or Why Can't This Be Love (all good songs in their own right, but not VH in the traditional sense of the form)? I think Sam came in and didn't have any preconceived notions as to what VH should be (which is why Ed loved having him so much...at first).

This was precisely why the band split in the first place. Dave had a strong opinion about staying away from sappy keyboard songs, and Ed wanted to finally use the songs he had written years before.

We are perhaps seeing the repeat of this problem now. Ed has stated that the stuff he has recently written isn't "bang your head against the wall kind of stuff." While I don't need every song to be Unchained or I'm the One, I'd rather that be the rule rather than the exception, which is why I've always been more of a Dave guy.

There are some similarities. Its got the classic Eddie I/IV comp going on. These two songs were written close together in time so undoubtedly Eddie was groovin on a specific riff or style. Kinda like you can hear similarities in his writing transitioning from balance to III.

I always thought Sucka was a great song. No body can make pick slides sound cooler than Eddie, and his harmonics in the very end are awesome.

I've never really loved sucker and honestly I've heard panama so many damn times I can't stand it anymore.

the band kinda screwed themselves by booking the MOR tour before OU812 was really finished. A few songs really suffered, over all I think the album is outstanding with the exception of sucker and perhaps source of infection (which I always loved until everyone on this damn board ripped the shit out of the lyrics now I can't listen to it anymore. I always got that sammy was just throwing vocals around and it was more of a jam with vocals but whatever...).

it just doesnt' sound like they really spent any time on it, it's got some cool parts to it but I hardly ever listen to it cause it just sounds unfinished to me (sucker that is).

    I've always hated SIA3P.

    "She's so fine/How bout a 9 on a 10 scale
With long legs/Straight on up to her lunch pail"

I don't want to get into a debate about silly lyrics but man ...

I don't really consider sucka as having lyrics...more just a collection of random woos and yeahs and uhhuhs and a couple of sam's patented sex phrases here and there.

HAHAHA is THAT what he's saying there?

hahaha...all these years I thought it was something to the effect of "atchoo! burning down the avenue, I don't know man, coming through my bed and plume"

I don't know, maybe it is just my Dave fandom, but I can tolerate DLR's lyrics (the Betty Boop line is his worst in VH I think) and not tolerate Sam's.

The lyrics in Sucker in a Three Piece just kill it for me. Sam making fun of some other guys big belly is kind of funny now in retrospect.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

When I started this thread, that's the first thing I thought of. Sam is now old and rich and a bit overweight - he's now the ideal sugar daddy!
