Default Windows Vista user account password help

O.k. guys i thought I'd ask around here because i know we have a lot of people with a lot of knowledge about this stuff....

My daughter changed her user account password for her laptop and promptly forgot it and dispite numerous attempts, cannot remember it. It is the only account on the computer, the guest and administrator accounts have been disabled (hers has administrator rights) so i cant get in that way, i have also tried using the restore partition when the thing is booting, to wipe the O.S. and have a fresh install (theres no important info on the computer) but that is also asking for the password before it will continue. The machine didnt come with any rescue/restore disks even though we bought it new from a computer store. Is there any way to get round this password and get into the thing or should i leave it to collect dust???
    Please help
model info.... Acer Aspire-5315 with Windows Vista home basic...fully updated

    many thanks in advance guys

This worked for my laptop, and it was abit more tricky than a password issue since my laptop had a virus on it that wouldn't even let Windows install CD to boot.

Get on a Windows computer, get a Flash USB device, and open this link - http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download

Follow the instructions on the site - everything is well explained. Once you've downloaded that version of Linux OS, install it on USB stick as shown in the pictures. You should have a bootable operating system on a flash drive after that.

On your daughter's computer, you have to change the boot order in BIOS to USB drive - I don't remember how it is done on Acer machines, but the general instructions are in here - http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixthe...rderchange.htm

After then, you should be able to start the computer running Linux from a flash drive. When it's loaded, you will have access to the machine's hard drive and you could format it to be able to re-install Windows on it again.

Maybe there is an easier method, but this surely worked for me. In fact I stopped using Windows altogether, after I'd tried Linux I installed it as my primary OS on my laptop. Hope that helps.

Ah, bummer about no-windows CD. You wouldn't be able to access windows operating files from Linux.

However if you don't mind being abit of a pirate, you can download Vista SP2 from here - http://isohunt.com/torrent_details/1...a?tab=comments , the guys in the comments explain how to burn ISO file onto a DVD. You should be able to use the original serial number (there should be a sticker somewhere underneath your daughter's laptop with it).

I really suck at giving technical advices because I go thru a range of errors myself before I get everything to work, but I still think you should give it a try instead of scrapping the computer! And cheers mate , feels good to be back

i may have to skip this one....I'm already being sued for an 'accidental' illegal download, i was trying to update Microsoft Word Home Student Edition and somehow managed to get a .iso file of something called U.K. Student House (a porn film) and they are wanting £500 off me, even though i didn't even download it completely (i realised in time) i never even knew that a movie file could be a .iso file, i thought they were all .mpg or .avi!....lol

Lmfao oh wow, I would get a life in prison for every thing I'd downloaded. Maybe I should stop blabbering about that on public forums then

If it was your computer, I'd say keep Linux but it might be abit tricky for your daughter.

You know, I just did a google search and found this - http://www.geckoandfly.com/1842/how-...ogin-password/ . Might be worth giving that ophcrack utility a go before you try my method.

In that case it's either Linux USB, or IT repair shop, or scrapping the computer. Seriously though, if I was anyone I would not use Windows because it's a piece of crap that makes your life harder . The first method worked for me so if you run into tech difficulties with it let me know, I'll try to help.

Lmfao sunday afternoon in Britain, more like. I was woken up at 9 by some nutcase having a domestic scene with his bird right outside my bloody window. Good times :P

Let me know how it works out (I hope your daughter deals with a no-laptop situation well, coz I'd started to go slightly insane without the internet access when mine died)

are you sure that the administrator account is disabled? You don't normally see it as a choice if you use the "Welcome" screen when you are in normal mode, so I don't know if that's what is making you think it's disabled, or you know it's disabled because you physically disabled it your self. If you boot up in Safe Mode (pressing F8 when the computer first starts until you get the Windows Advanced Start Menu), you should get your administrator login. If it truly is disabled, might want to ask around to any friends or coworkers or classmates to see if they have their Vista CD (and make sure it's the same version that you're licensed for, of course!)

thanks for all your help and advice i have now made a password recovery disk and made my own account on there just in case she has any future memory lapses!

wow! I don't believe I would've been that lucky! Not sure how the administrator account being disabled saves disk space - I'd probably reactivate it in case you ever need it.
