    Default outlook/.pst damage

So I'm starting to think I may be screwed.

Billy or any of you other propeller head types that are smarter than I am, love to hear you chime in..

Power went off yesterday, forced a hard boot, resulting in a damaged .pst file which contains about 3 years worth of email. Can't connect to the server anymore, or delete emails etc. I get a ".pst could not be accessed, cyclic redundancy error" message. LAN supports only offer to help came as "have to start over"....uh, yeah. Not acceptable....bitchass!!!.

the program MS includes to repair it, scanpst.exe (once you find it) also doesn't work ("unexpected error"). I think because it's over 2gb.

There are many options to purchase recovery tools, but it's tough to find one with consistent reviews and that are free from scams or preying on the desperate (which I admittedly am, but don't want to pay for that).

Any experience with these softwares? Anything work?

    Gah!

Go to Techspot.com and ask the resident tech heads there. It's where I go when I cant brain something out and since scanpst.exe didnt work for ya, I'd be loggin on there if I were having this issue myself.

That's good advice. Those guys at Techspot.com are good.

Yes, if your personal file is over 2 GB, that is not good, especially if you have an older version of Outlook (or a newer version but your .pst was created in an older version). But there may be hope...

First, create a new personal folder file (hopefully you know how to do that, if not, tell me what version of Outlook you have). Make sure you give it a name that distiguishes it from your other personal file - if your other file is called "Personal Folders", call this one "Personal Folders II" or "Personal Folders New" or something like that. Also at this time, detach from your original personal folder (but don't delete the file)

Then you can go under File/Import and Export. Choose the option to "Import from another program or file" and then choose "Personal Folder File (.pst)" and click "Next". Point to your old personal folder under "File To Import", and you should need to worry about which "Duplicates" option is checked as your new personal folder file should be empty. Click "Next". In a normal situation, you could just highlight "Personal Folders" in the next screen, but because you don't want to recreate your current situation in the new folder set, you'll need to import each folder one at a time. Start with the ones that have stuff you can clean out, and after you get those folders imported into the new personal folders - clean them out! Don't forget to empty deleted items after you've cleaned them up, too! Also, when cleaning out folders, sort by size and look for the stuff with the biggest attachments - if you've already saved it to your hard drive, there's probably no reason to save the message (unless you need the body text) - delete as many of these as you can and you'll get back space faster.

But Billy, I don't think size is the issue....never has been before.

Wait, are you saying that I should skinny it down and then try scanpst again?

The older files seem to crap out once they get past 2 GB - they may be okay for awhile, but I've seen it a few times.

You can try to delete from your current .pst, but from the ones I've seen that have gotten to your point, it won't let you delete. That's why you need to import the messages into a new set of folders that it should let you delete from. If it will let you delete from your current set, then, yeah, by all means, delete what you can and you can try compacting the files (you'll see that option on the properties for your personal folders) and also rerunning the inbox repair tool (scanpst.exe)

Billy, you're so dang smart. Thanks.

First I'll let my LAN guy try something in the morning (copying my pst to a shared drive for him now) where I think he's going to try to open it/fix it from within an office 2007 shell (I'm on 2003). I'll let him fail first, then go with what you're talking about here and give that a shot.

Since you're on Outlook 2003, and if the PST file was originally created with 2003, your PST file should allow up to a 20 GB maximum file size. So PST file size shouldn't be an issue. If you end up needing a reference for a good third party utility, in the past I have used Ontrack Data Recovery's EasyRecovery FileRepair to fix a damaged PST file when all else failed. Actually it was able to pull out all of the data from the damaged PST and place it in a new PST file, when scanpst.exe was not able to do anything.

    Thanks Don.

Yep, the 3 gig isn't really a problem for me, except that scanpst.exe just simply stops trying when it sees' it's over 2gb.

I'll look up Ontrack and keep it in my back pocket.

    Thanks dude!

Yeah, won't let me import from the old .pst until it's checked for errors, and I can't get through the error check without that fucking cyclic redundancy error.
