Default Gary Talks VH with Eddie Trunk

He like Mike is a class act.

'Old Van Halen, when I was in it-classic Van Halen-makes you wanna drink, dance and screw, right? And the new Van Halen encourages you to drink milk, drive a Nissan and have a relationship.' - David Lee Roth.

I can't load this up right now. Is this from Gary and Nuno's appearance on That Metal Show or something else?
    Stay out of it, dude.

No, it sounds like Trunk's radio show. This is a great listen. Trunk as usual does a great job and Gary is very candid as well. Sounds like it was done in Oct '09.

Gary's great. I never realized his boston accent was so heavy!

It was good to hear him say he was proud of the record. He should be.

Yeah...There's no disputing he gave it his all regardless of your feelings on the disc. I found it interesting redarding his feelings about the actual recording. Like how he wished they had done some shows first, or spent more time together as a unit. Also kind of sounds like he regretted the choice of Mike Post a little in terms of the production, saying it was his first rock record. Ehhh....Maybe he's right. If they had more time together prior to recording, it may have been better. At least it explains the final result in terms of the albums shortcomings. Like the vocals and performance on some of the tunes that appear are just basically remixed demos of tunes that were recorded within three days of being together. So basically it pretty much was conceived as it came across to the masses in the final product...A rushed, uncohesive unit. I agree with him though....I thought the live deal from Sidney was waaay better than the album.
    Wow!
She looks so $#@!'n good ,so sexy and so frail....Somethin's got the bite on me, I'm goin' straight to Hell.

I don't think it'd shock anyone to know that Gary's a good guy...Didn't Ed call him an angel at some point?

I think Gary made a lot of valid points and it does help to explain a lot of why I think VH3 blows so bad. Sounds like everything was very rushed, which makes no sense to me. Stupid on Ed not to take more time and get it right considering it was a new lineup and would be under incredible scrutiny.

perhaps it was rushed for a reason? Perhaps where many may say it's uncohesive, slapped together, piece-meal, rushed or whatever Ed would say he was trying to give us a very raw, spur of the moment snap shot of where they were heading?

It doesn't surprise me to hear there bits of demos on the final record. Maybe they were so enthused and in the moment that they wanted to capture that rather than mindfucking it. There was a lot of enthusiasm, a lot of purpose and energy at the time and perhaps Ed wanted to get the first record done, get on the road and then start working on their Dark Side of the Moon, as he put it way back when.

The record really created a desire for me to see what came next. I listened to it and thought,(and to to this day still think) "wow, if this is where Van Halen is heading, I really want to see what happens when they get there."

I think Gary made a great point about the decision to do the record as they did probably not being the best one given the commercial responsibilities and expectations the Might Van Halen had created for itself. Given the band's history and expectations perhaps the album would have been more well received had they done a tour, gotten the fans warmed up while simultaneously warming up themselves and then record the record. They could have done new unreleased material live, working out the kinks and such as they went along. The record would probably have been a more polished album more indicative of a seasoned group that had been together for a time rather than a group of guys who were hot to get going Things might have played out a lot different. We could be enjoying another two or three VH records right now. Who knows?

The other thing I was quite interested with his interview was the bit that he didn't want to go into detail about...something about things going on within the band. Could he be talking about the Daniels stuff that gets talked about a lot around here? Could he be talking about issues between Mike and the brothers?

oh to be the proverbial fly on the wall.
    Stay out of it, dude.

I was very interested in the Mike Post comments. What I got from it was, yes, it was largely Eddies vision for a different direction in some ways, but that it wasn't translated correctly in the final product. So maybe Ed wasn't as completely to blame in the final sound/feel of the album, other than the fact that if it wasn't right, he should have stopped and made it right with someone else. The whole thing was just wrong though. Gary was kind of pushed into the frey by Ray, and even Eddie's first gut reaction was he was not right for the band, but agreed to him only after meeting him and liking him on a personal level. Should have gone with his gut, and stuck to his guns.
