Default Personal Freedom Falls in San Diego

Lack of funds for a live body, or for whatever reason..... this event in San Diego is beginning of the end of personal freedom in the US.

    ----------------------------------------------------------

    http://www.10news.com/news/24202545/detail.html

Fingerprints Now Required At Poway Skate-Boarding Park

POWAY, Calif. -- A popular skate park in Poway unveiled a new security measure Friday that is being met with some opposition.

At the Poway Skate Park, surveillance cameras capture the every move of every visitor. Additionally, motion detectors are also present and a wrought iron fence surrounds the park. Some visitors said the security measures are a bit much.

"This is the only facility, I'd say, in the San Diego area that has this big reinforcement around it and the turnstile. I've been here when law enforcement causes problems for kids. They come in here and everyone panics, they start feverishly running and they get hurt on the bowls," said skater Doug Marker.

Up until 6 p.m. Friday, skaters could simply walk right through and pretty much do whatever they want.

After 6 p.m., however, a fingerprint scan will be required in order to enter the skate park. Skaters will have to register their fingerprints and have a photo taken in advance.

City officials said the new security measure will allow law enforcement to determine who was at the park if something were to happen there. The city also said the added security measure is an effort to stop an increase in vandalism, drug use and break ins that have plagued the park for the last five years.

"This is a city park; it has to be returned to the citizens. We want kids in here, we want adults in here, we want a secure, safe environment; this is not a free-for-all," said Poway City Councilman Jim Cunningham.

"If they didn't have all this here, they wouldn't need it because the thrill of climbing the fence and spray painting and stuff like that wouldn't be here," said skater David Hamm.

Some parents 10News spoke to said all the security still won't be enough.

"I think what they really need is to have someone supervise, but I don't know if that is possible," said parent Michelle Keeler.

City officials said staffing full-time supervision would cost around $80,000 a year and is not possible financially at this time.

The park cost $1 million to build in 2003, and all of the security upgrades will cost around $91,000.

Unless they're rounding people up and forcing them to use the park, no one is giving up anything. If you don't want to submit to the fingerprinting and whatnot, don't go there.

If people quit showing up, they'll probably revise their plans.

Oh, and a one-time cost of $91,000 makes a lot more sense than a perpetual annual cost that starts at $80,000.

You're way off on this one Vic. Except for the part about not going. It would be enough to keep me from going.

It's too much. It's the same thing the Nazi's did to the Jews by tattooing them during WWII, only this time it's hi-tech.

At what point do the American people just stand up and say enough is enough?

It's not a Nazi thing, it's just stupid.

Most skater kids just want to skate. The guys who are there to cuase problems aren't skaters. Also, if nobody's there to moniter the park the kids who are trouble makers will just find some other way to get into the park.

As a Californian I don't see how this is a wise use of public funding.

$80k seems a bit steep, especially in our current economy. Someone would take that job for less, no?

That was kind of my thought, too - how much does a rent-a-cop really cost?

Probably not 80 grand but maybe part of that is liability insurance, training fees etc. etc. That would be my guess. Maybe it totals to 80 grand.

If it is really a problem then it is cheaper to bulldoze it and plant grass. Down the road they can rebuild it if they still want it.

Respectfully, I'm standing by my previous statement. There's no comparison to what the Nazi's did to the Jews. When they start rounding up skaters everywhere and forcing them to submit, severely punishing any that are found non-compliant, then you might begin to make that comparison. I emphasize "might".

At what point do the American people just stand up and say enough is enough?

Benjamin Franklin said it best, "They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."
And therein is my point. Exercise your freedom to not go there. Is there something in San Diego that entitles everyone to free unfettered access to skate parks? If everyone refuses to use the park until the rules are changed, the rules will be changed. There's your freedom.

Do I think it's lame? Sure. Do I think it's "the beginning of the end of personal freedom in the U.S." No. LOL. That came sometime during the last 9 years if not sooner. I'm not sure installing verified access to a skate park is even on the radar.

I have to agree with you Viking.

The Govt. does not have right to "monitor" the whereabouts of it's populace, by electronic means, or, in the case of the Nazi's.... by having "papers" to go from one place to another.

The camel's nose in the tent.... can you feel it, yet ? ? ?

it says it's to prevent drug use, vandalism and break-ins. How exactly do you break into a skate park?

I opened the thread expecting to get really pissed off, but I'm actually OK with this. If the park has been that bad for 5 years then why not hold everyone accountable? The fingerprints are only required after 6pm and I'm sure it will keep some of the scumbags out.

I'm almost always against shit like this but I gotta say, if this park were down the street from my house I'd be happy about the decision.

And I agree with Vic, the thread title is a little over the top and there is hardly a comparison to the Nazi's here! LOL.....
