Default Tom Cruise bombs at the box office

Cruise's thriller "Knight and Day" fizzled at No. 3 with $20.5 million. It was the worst result for a Cruise action flick in 20 years and a sign that audiences still have not forgiven him for erratic behavior a few years back, which included his couch-jumping incident on Oprah Winfrey's show.

"He's one of the biggest stars of all time, but no question, this has impacted him," said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com. "It's not like it's irrevocable or unchangeable. Look at all the stars who have been jailed or caught in compromising sexual situations and then came back. Many stars do recover. It just may take a lot of time for him."

Reviews were fair for "Knight and Day," which features Cruise as a charming spy who finds romance with a civilian (Cameron Diaz) on a globe-trotting adventure. Yet distributor 20th Century Fox could not pull in a big audience despite a heavy marketing push that included sneak-peak screenings a week earlier and a Wednesday debut designed to build fan buzz for opening weekend.

Since Wednesday, "Knight and Day" has taken in $27.8 million. It added $12.6 million in 12 overseas markets, but the movie has a long road ahead to recoup a production budget of around $107 million.

Even so, Chris Aronson, head of domestic distribution for 20th Century Fox, said the studio was happy with the results.

"I do think with the excellent reviews we've caught along with its playability, that it's going to be the movie of choice for smart audiences and will be for a while," Aronson said.

At the height of the Cruise backlash four years ago — sparked by odd behavior including rants about Scientology and his couch-bouncing proclamation of devotion to Katie Holmes — his "Mission: Impossible III" debuted with $47.7 million, well over twice the take for "Knight and Day." Granted, the latter is a harder sell compared to an established action franchise.

Even Cruise's Nazi Germany drama "Valkyrie," which arrived with modest expectations two years ago, did better with $21 million in its first weekend.

"Knight and Day" had Cruise's lowest action debut since the 1990 race-car thriller "Days of Thunder," which pulled in $15.5 million while playing in 800 fewer theaters. Factoring in higher ticket prices, "Days of Thunder" would have debuted with about $29 million in today's dollars.

Good. He's a horrible actor, and nearly everyone finally seems to get it.

I just came back from that movie...very enjoyable. Pure popcorn - and that's fine.

From what I've read about Grown Ups - infinitely better - and certainly worthy of more $'s at the box office.

Regardless - I saw it, worth my $10.

Seems to me that the Oprah thing happened long ago. Maybe the movie was purely and simply fried ass on toast. The trailer certainly made it seem El barfo.

Heard the reviews for that one and they say it absolutely sucks. Bunch of washed up SNL hacks who teamed up to make an easy paycheck while not delivering. Never understood the attraction to any of those people who used the show as a springboard when they really weren't all that humorous to begin with. When you try to take those dipshits who only know one liners and put them on the bigscreen, it doesn't work. Will Farrell, Sandler, drip dry paintjob Spade, they're all boring as fuck to me. Kevin James? Puh-leeze! Tom Cruise and Will Smith are the same way too, one dimensional. When you see any movie from either, you know you're getting Tom Cruise or Will Smith. BFD

for a movie to open huge these days it seems it has to be

    1 a kid/teen movie
    2 a cult movie
    3 a franchise movie

Tom Cruise's audience is no longer of the age where they'll go see him in anything....we have bills to pay after all

but I think this is premature....it's not a bomb unless it gets through the holiday week/end and is still putting up disappointing numbers

I liked the movie, thought it was a lot of fun,was it an all time great film? No,just a good movie that entertained me for an hour and a half.

Tom Cruise might be mad as a Hatter, but he's a fine actor and I enjoy most of his work, couldnt care less about his outlook on life and religion.

Maybe part of the problem here is that "they" cast the wrong co-star. Cameron Diaz is highly annoying, not a very good actress, and IMO is just not all that attractive. I suppose it could have been worse, she isn't Garafolo unattractive, but I'm thinking Diane Lane or Jennifer Connelly. Hell yeah, Jennifer Connelly, they're real and they're spectacular!

So anyway, it may not be all Tom's fault.

Isnt it about time for Top Gun II? Kenny Loggins has one more hit song in him. Val Kilmer could play a crazy evil rogue pilot that only Tom Cruise can understand and eliminate. Hell, Tom Skerritt is still around as well, he was the only talent in that movie, along with Anthony Edwards.

It was a very entertaining and enjoyable movie. It's not meant to be a serious piece. I think Cruise is a fine actor and I've enjoyed a number of his films. I really don't care what his does with his private life.

I actually really liked Valkyrie, was one of my favorite stories from my WWII History course back in college so I might have been biased, but I thought he did a fine job with it.

Nothing against him as an actor. I think he is off his rocker in his personal life, but I really don't care about that shit anyway.

I actually think the matt lauer thing was worse than the couch thing. Cruise thinks he's waaay smarter than he is. Remember him just totally ragging on psychology? I would bet a couple of pay checks that the only things he's ever read about that subject was provided to him by the church of scientology. Same as when he was ragging on brooke shields. when he had someone doing his publicity for him and helping him act like a normal guy it was all good. Once all his arrogance came forward and people saw what a nut job he was that's when he lost his audience.
