Default How Many Would Be Happy With This?

I know most die hard VH Fans would love VH to put out a new album...I guess that would be an understatement. How about if VH put out just a few songs at a time either on a EP CD or through I-Tunes and tour every year. I could live with that since most bands at VH point of their career generally only play a few new songs on their tours sprinkled amongst their greatest hits.

Van Halen though has been about playing just about the whole album they are touring behind.

I'm divided on this issue. On the one hand, a few new songs here and there would be a step in the right direction.

However, there is another thread complaining about them being a nostalgia band. I don't want to go and hear Jump at every VH concert for the foreseeable future. I'd rather see them put out a solid album and tour the heck out of it before they worked in classic material.

I didn't see the last tour because of Mike and the lack of new material.

One of my favorite bands, Killing Joke is currently doing this. They're releasing several 4 - 5 song EPs this year leading up to a double album release with all the material in November. I think The Cult and The Smashing Pumpkins are doing this as well. It's nice, kind of like serializing a book in chapters but hardly satisfying as a full album and I suppose when compared with the utter lack of new material Van Halen has released the last decade. it's certainly better than nothing.

However, this sort of approach reaches a far smaller, more select audience than the old fashioned way of releasing an album with accompanying singles along with heavy record company-backed promotion. Ed and Alex's (and possibly Dave's) egos and business mindset are firmly rooted in a now outdated, old fashioned marketing scheme of being backed by a huge entity (Warner Bros) and playing to massive audiences. They were able to pull off big tours backed by Warner Bros (2004) and Live Nation (2007 - 2008) based on the nostalgia factor and novelty of the Hagar and Roth reunions but I really doubt they can do the same scale tour again. And the band's ego isn't going to settle for playing theaters (which Eddie hated doing at the end of the Cherone tour) especially since they aren't hurting for money anymore.

The only motivation now for doing *anything* for these guys is a *lot* of money and releasing quaint little EPs and internet-only songs doesn't qualify.

Don't get me wrong I would prefer a full length album but at this point I think that is wishful thinking for VH. I agree that there is no way that they could put on a tour like the last one without new music. I have a friend that works for Live Nation and he said that VH would have a difficult time getting people to pay the prices they were getting the last tour if they went out and did the samething again. The only way I see them being able to do it again would be if the 4 original members got back together. Highly doubtful at this point.

Give me 3-4 new tunes, a bunch of old unreleased stuff, and maybe even some re-takes, like Unchained or Romeo Delight ala 2010, and I'd be there front row no matter what it cost.

Frankly, I have zero interest in hearing any music from this lineup. At this stage of the game, their best bet is to open up the vaults and give us some chestnuts and old classic concert footage from days gone by. Back when they really were the mighty Van Halen. They haven't been that since 1984.

A boxset/DVD is the only way to please some of us.

"IF" they put out a new full length album, I'd expect them to play just about all of it on tour and add in some of the classics that maybe weren't done the last time as well as 4 or 5 staples like JUMP, PANAMA, UNCHAINED and YRGM.

It's a neat idea, as Rush just released 2 new (and really strong) tracks to itunes but I think that it's just a bridge to a new full length album. I think that would be VH's best bet....release a couple of things to whet the appetite and then hit them with the full meal deal.

These days I think that would be a smart move from a business standpoint. If you were to release a few tracks via iTunes or other venue and see how it goes. That would test the waters to see if a full length album would be well recieved. If the tracks flop, there is no reason to go through with a full album. Perhaps it would also be a good way to try some new musical directions and see what does well.

    **snickers**

Such dreamers around here. Ed pretty much spelled things out in that last GW interview. Though that was evident? Guess not.
