    Default Floyd Rose Problem???

    Hey Guys,

I just finished my first Franky guitar this last week and had it professionally put together as I needed the Floyds wood screws drilled as it didnt have any.

After I got it home, I jammed on it a bit and noticed that it is quite hard to to depress the bar. It kind of feels like there are 6 springs on it or something. Its only got 3 on it. I've got one of the 37mm brass blocks on it, but I doubt that has anything to do with this. I bought this Floyd off of ebay (secondhand, as it was nicely reliced).

I cant workout why it is so stiff/hard to divebomb. Anyone got any ideas???

Here are a couple of pics...

you see those 2 screws that hold the trem claw in place (where the springs clip on to) lossen them a little, if the bridge starts to 'float' tighten them a half turn until you get the correct balance.

Either that or the floyd is mounted too close to the body. You may need to shim the neck to get the floyd off the body a touch.

    Good luck.

Yeah, I think this must be it. The guy who put it together for me said the neck wasn't shimmed and that he mounted the Floyd flat to the body.

Thanks for the help guys. I've never built a guitar before so I dont know the secrets to setting them up from the get go.

I would suggest you remove the center spring and set the remaining two in either one of the following ways...

Next, tighten the trem claw until you have the desired tension/play. I like to tighten the screws all the way into the body.

I believe what dtuner317 was trying to tell you here is that the bridge posts may be too close to the body. That would restrict the forward movement of the bridge plate when you depress the bar. Check and see if there is a space between the front of the bridge plate and the body. If it's touching, just raise it until there is a space. Ideally, the bridge should be parallel with the body for the pivot points to perform optimally...
As for the rear of the bridge plate: for a true EVH set-up you need to have it making contact with the body. In other words, mounted "flush".
I also like the big block to make contact with the trem cavity and the trem claw to be completely flush with the wood as well. With those three points of contact in place it creates a continuous signal chain for the transfer of vibration and resonance.
For example: play a chord on your guitar unplugged. Now play it again, but this time hold any part of your guitar against an object like a desk, refrigerator, table etc. and you notice an marked increase in volume due to the fact that the vibration of your guitar is being transferred to the object!

You can tell by the pics that the floyd has no room for downward movement. Easy fix dude, good luck.

Raise the Floyd posts so there's a little space--but also keep the base of the bridge plate even with the body. Shim the neck if this raises the action too much. Regarding the spring tension: Those springs are made in different tension variations (I believe heavy, medium, and light). I don't know much about measuring that, but you can order them as such. Perhaps putting three light or medium tension springs in the back will also help you better balance the trem.

Personally, I like to adjust my Floyd posts so that I have about 1/8 of an inch of space between the Floyd base and the body in the front position. If the base is any lower, the pivoting action seems tight. I also loosen the trem claw screws so that the Floyd base continues to make contact with the body when releasing the trem bar but not so loose that the Floyd lifts when bending the the strings - screw 1/4 turns to fine tune. Depending on the number of springs that you use -- two or three -- will determine if the claw is closer to the body. Two will be closer than three.

If your current action is perfect but the base is too low, raise the base to about 1/8 inch in the front and use a shim in the back of the neck pocket to raise the neck - you may need to try several shims to find the perfect height. I try to use hard metal shims that are about 1/4 wide and span the entire rear pocket. If you can't find a suitable shim, you can always try a guitar pick like the Fender replica! You should also re-check your intonation after making this adjustment. good-luck!

Awesome... Thanks for all the advice. I'll try raising the trem a bit and shimming the neck.

I'll let you all know how it goes...

    Thanks again.

Agreed with the others. Two springs works well with 9s.

BTW, get a refund while you're at it...

rookie move and you're having to redo most of what you paid a "pro" to do for you.

great build by the way. another one that's got that Fender replica vibe going on. Cool...

No need for a refund. The guy did what I asked him to do. I asked for it to be flush with the body... It was my mistake for not taking more notice. A couple of turns with a screw driver and it will be sweet.

Thanks for the compliment on the guitar. Those photos were taken with the late afternoon sun blaring on it, so it looks a little orange in the pics.

Hey Dutchie. if you still have a problem after adjusting, then the next thing to do is check those springs. By their appearance, my guess is you might have some one size fits all jobs in there. Get some good quality Fender trem Springs, or real OFR springs. You'll notice that they look a lot more shiney for one thing, and regardless of their rated tension, depressing the bar will be far easier and feel more balanced. Also as Jimi said, with .9's....two springs in the V shape seem to work best, and the claw can be in quite a ways without feeling to stiff.
She looks so $#@!'n good ,so sexy and so frail....Somethin's got the bite on me, I'm goin' straight to Hell.

I finally got some spare time to tackle this today.

I adjusted the floyd by raising the wood screws and then took the neck off and shimmed it with a CVH logo pick. Worked perfectly. The action is better too.

Thanks for all the tips Guys. Much appreciated.
