    My VH Rasta Project

Inspired by Jimi's creation, and of course GAS, I decided to try and do a VH Rasta. It's a rare-enough guitar that few would even know what it was and I wouldn't feel stupid playing it live. So I intend to actually play this thing. I really never play my 5150 or my B/W Frank.

So on Jimi's suggestion, got a body from Mitch at KNE Guitars. It's their Charvel San Dimas body with a cut for the Strat jackplate. I actually went to his house to pick up the body. Mitch is a very cool guy, and does great work if you need a body.

So this thread will basically be my little daily log of the painting and assembly process. I'm trying to really take my time and do this thing cleanly, especially since there are so many colors and so much taping involved. And maybe you'll see some pics of me getting frustrated and throwing the thing through the wall.

So here's where I'm at so far.

Day 1 (going to tape it up and paint it red later today)

Cool luck, Brett and above all, take your time! This is much easier than it looks once you understand the color sequence and how the "shapes" are made.

I suggest print out the following pictures...

...they will help you see the patterns of each color in a different way and you'll discern a few, not so obvious details that you would not see otherwise - especially with the colors inverted and the high contrast! I tell you, these pictures proved invaluable while I was painting mine!

Great Project! I will follow the process.
Can't wait to see the final result.

I, too, am looking forward to seeing the progress on this! And by the way, I just checked out the KNE site, and I had no clue that Mitch's prices were so good. I'll be ordering a body soon myself.

    Ok...Day 2

I've actually been lightly wet-sanding between colors just to get rid of a little of the overspray and rough spots. It's worked out great. I'm not posting the back, because like Jimi I've taken some liberties with the back design, even though I have a good pic of Ed's. To me the back just isn't that big of a deal how close it looks.

Like the Laker colors with the towel? It actually wasn't on purpose either.

I just took this picture while I was painting, because it was a funny salmon color for a while.

And with the red all done. I'm gonna wet sand it and tape it up this afternoon. The Laker game is kind of messing with my day here, but it will be painted white by end of day.

Looks good so far, Brett! Great job with the stripes!
BTW, do you have tape in the neck pocket? If not, you should from here on in... remember, the addition of five coats of paint will change the depth of the neck pocket! I always like to tape off the neck pocket prior to painting as I prefer wood on wood contact when the neck is installed.

Day 3....three colors down, hardest two to go.

Well after the Lakers decided to upset me and lose, I still dragged myself down to the garage to paint it white, like I planned.

Here's it all taped up. Unfortunately I did a few of the yellow stripes a tad bit off, so mine is not as exact as Jimi's, but it will have to do. The spacing just got a little off so I kinda had to work around that issue.

Took a lot of white to cover up the red, basically the entire can.

Tomorrow morning I plan to take the tape off before work, so I will post it after I do. Holding my breath it looks somewhat decent.

looks like a good start!! Patience is the key with taping and painting these EVH-type weird, striped designs..

    Day 4....

Ok so here's the thing with the white/red/yellow scheme. Now the tough part, the green.

My stripe placement is a little off, it's not quite as exact as Jimi's so I kinda have to go with what I got. But it looks pretty good. Better than I thought it would actually, I've really had no issues at all.
