    Default 2010 FIFA World Cup

Got to have a thread about the biggest sporting event in the world.

Starts in a week. Hope it's a good one.

I will be cheering for the defending World Champs but am not overly optimistic about our chances this time around. I will get just as much joy in watching England fall flat on their faces. This year they might have a chance though as they have an Italian coaching.

England have been an unmitigated disaster for years and yet, for a period of maybe six or seven years, the team was the best in the world ..... on paper. Bad management really screwed them up.

I'm not much of a flag waver, but I would like to see them do well, just for once.

Most of my friends here in Dusseldorf are American. Our first match is UK vs USA. It's going to be entertaining that night, for sure.

I might invest in an American flag just wave while I root against the English.

What 6-7 year period are you referencing?

I kid, I kid. (Not really, but, you know...)

As for soccer, I haven't watched a game since '02 when the U.S. thoroughly outplayed Germany and lost 1-0. In sports, generally, the team that hustles the most is rewarded. The team that plays the best wins. In soccer, eh, not so much. What really galls me are the fake injuries. Grown men flailing around and flopping on the grass like they'd been shot. Just so weak.

I have more respect for hockey. <--- For the consumption of our Canadian contingent.

Not that long ago. It was always lamented, time and time again, by the pundits on TV that the national team had such a depth of very talented players, from the biggest clubs in the world and with some of the highest price tags, and how, for whatever reason they were unable to play together as a coherent unit.

I'm not a huge footie fan and not that knowledgeble, but when your squad has the likes of Michael Owen, wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Ashley Cole, David Beckham, Rio Ferdinand, John Terry, Alan Shearer, Sol Campbell, Paul Scholes.... etc, you should be winning trophies.

Some of those players remain, but there are a few names in the new squad that I don't even recognise, not watching the domestic leagues anymore.

Still, with the new manager they are 20 wins and from 24 games. Pretty good record for a guy trying to form a new team.

England has this awful habit of talking up their players like they're the greatest thing since sliced bread. They certainly have some talent (this year's club has a couple of the better players in the world on it) but they've never (at least in my lifetime) had the most talent. The answer to that question is almost always Brazil. The depth of talent on that squad is typically untouchable. When Brazil slips up it's usually going to be to a team that can defend (Italy, Germany). The English are not world famous for their ability to stop people. I imagine that's why they brought in Capello -to teach them that concept.

The biggest problem with England however (and Italy has faced a similar problem recently) is that their domestic league has too many foreign stars in it. So when you're drawing up your national team you can't say "Ok, Man U won the title, let's draw most of our club from them so they have a conhesive unit" - unfortauntely most of the guys on that club will be your opponents come World Cup time. Italy this year was the home of the European Champions in Inter Milan. Guess how many players Inter is giving to the Italian National Team? Zero. It's a friggin disgrace.

Noel Gallagher (huge soccer fan) said it best about English soccer when he said that the English are very good when there were a few of them on a team of other nationalities, but give me a team of them and it's a bloody mess.

I'm hoping this is again the case in 2010. GO USA in the first match.

    news that doesn't upset me.

RUSTENBURG, South Africa -- Rio Ferdinand hobbled out of a hospital on crutches after injuring his left knee in training Friday, and sources told ESPN that England's captain will miss the World Cup.

The 31-year-old center back was injured while defending against striker Emile Heskey during England's first full training session in South Africa, barely a week before England's opener against the United States in Rustenburg on June 12.

It's Mike... Did an Englishman fuck your girlfriend or something? You seem to be harbouring some bitterness.

1985 - Liverpool/Juventus. I'm a Juventus fan, ever since that day I've wished nothing but disaster for anyone involved in the sport that resides in England.

Fair enough. I guess I feel the same way about the Argentinian team ever since the "hand of god" goal by Maradona.

Even more so when a few minutes later he went on to score one of the best goals ever seen in a finals.

    Bastard.

Can't blame you on that one either. Little rat bastard was a hell of a talent but that must have hurt.

I too will be rooting for Italy, as I'm first generation Italian-American. But how you feel about England is how I feel about Brazil. Cannot stand them, though I suspect they will be earning their sixth trophy in a little over a month.
