Ortega Hwy, starting in San Juan Capistrano, Ca.. I have had 3 friends die on it since we all got our licenses and many more have died on it since. It is a 2 lane highway that snakes through the Cleveland National Forest and is a favorite of motorcyclists and muscle car owners. This road takes no prisoners!!

Indeed. Not a fan of this road at all. Even in broad, clear-as-a-bell daylight....this highway is a drive with the devil.

Interstate 15 is really bad from LA to Vegas. I remember driving home from Vegas about fifteen years ago and witnessing a car flip out coming towards us from the opposite direction.

I agree with the I-15 pick...AND 89A in AZ. Holy crap...that road is the hilliest, narrowest, most winding road I've ever had my truck on.

There are also a collection of roads in Nor Cal that no one will ever hear of but if you ever find yourself having to go from Garberville on the 101 to a puff of dirt town called Xenia, that road is taking your life in your hands. Also, if you are a pot grower in Laytonville Ca, the road to Spyrock and the Eel River is a motherfucker to navigate at night....and its not just because of the terrain. Pot farmers ain't hippies anymore, they are fuckin guerilla warfare pop out of the bushes, jump in the back of your truck and hold you at gunpoint until you can get someone to vouch for you type of people.

I wouldn't have put I-5 in CA on that list. There have to be worse than that. Even with the fog it's a straight drive, except down near the grapevine.

Another one is the 395, esp. the 395/I15 intersection. The last time I drove through there, there wasn't a stop light, let alone a stop sign there.

I-15 is a shirt road. It makes no sense too, since LA-Vegas is one of the busiest roads in America. There should really be a high speed train between the two cities, it would take less than 2 hours. All the other modern cities in the world have this kind of transportation.

I know it's not technically a US road but Rt. 1 from Tijuana to Cabo is probably the worst road I've ever traveled. Sections that are miles long filled with so many pot holes that it looks like a war zone. Dirt roads that hug 100-200 foot cliffs without guard rails and 18 wheelers that think nothing of doing 65 mph on those roads. Oh yeah did I mention the dead live stock, ie horses, cows etc in the middle of the road.

I've been on some of those roads - never thought of I-15 between Vegas and L.A. to be that bad, but that's me.

One road that will be forever ingrained in my mind is 30/340 around the western tip of Maui - one lane road for a pretty long stretch, winding around on the edge of a cliff on one side and a steep wall with potential falling rocks on the other. If you caught a glimpse of a car coming the other direction in the distance, you needed to find the widest spot you could to pull over as soon as possible. Plus, we had one local go zooming out and around us at one point. Was good to breathe again after getting off that one!

Not the USA, but there is road on the island of Tenerife that scared the shit out of me. One foot high wooden fence leading to a sheer cliff drop down, with the rest of the mountain going straight up the otherside. I couldn't count the numbers of crosses I saw planted along the road, where people had gone over.

To add to the terror, our local taxi driver was whacked out of his mind, probably on coke, and insisted on getting as close to the edge as he could on each hairpin. Even broadsided the car a few times. All done with the trademark macho grin.

A fun trip to the hotel.

The "Road To Hana" in Maui was the scariest driving I have ever done in my life.
