    Working on a Wolfgang EXP

So, I've been thinking that instead of spending well over a grand on the new EVH Wolfgang Special that's coming out, I'd get my old Wolf EXP back in working order. There's nothing wrong with the guitar itself, it's just that the Korean Floyd Rose copy on it has always given me trouble, and the intonation is a bit out of wack. Also, I'm not as fond of the pickups on the EXP as I am of my American Wolfgang Special ST. They're a bit dull sounding on the Korean model...

So, what I'd like to do is replace the cheap Floyd that's already on with a new American made Original Floyd Rose. Is this a job that's best suited for a technician, or is it a simple enough operation to do by myself. Also? I'd like to replace the old pickups with the new EVH pups from the VH store, but that should be a simple enough job.

i think swapping the floyd should be straight forward...not done it myself on a wolfgang EXP though so i cant be 100% sure (although i have swapped several floyds over the years, the guitarfetish.com floyd is pretty good and VERY cheap, i recently fitted one to my Kramer and im very happy with it).
while you're working on it, strip the neck on the EXP and oil finish it, you'll be glad you did

I stuck my OFR from my 1980's Kramer focus 1000 on my 1992 EVH Ernie Ball music man.
The action has always been a little too high so i guess i should shim the neck a little more.

When you say strip the neck and oil finish it, how do you strip it? Also, can you tell me a little more about the oil finish? I built a Wolfgang replica a few years back and I want to upgrade the guitar. After reading your post I thought I would inquire and possibly take this advise while upgradeing mine.

well if memory serves, the Wolfgang EXP has a satin finish on the neck. simply sand off the old finish using good quality sand paper using finer and finer grades until it is perfectly smooth (also take care not to go mad and alter the profile of the neck)...i suppose you could use some kind of stripping chemical and some wire wool, but im not sure what effect this could have on the wood, best ask some of the more professional guys on these boards.
then grab some tru cassey gunstock oil and follow the instructions on the can...i have not used this oil myself but thats what i understand a lot of the guys on here use, personally i use a mixture of lemon oil and bees wax that i was told about by a guy who works for Washburn

While not a professional, I do consider myself a bit of an expert on Asian neck sealer removal. Use sandpaper through and through; no chemical strippers, they will ruin a neck and any prospect of refinning, even with oil.

I start with 50 grit. Yes 50 on a very, very slow basis. Just barely kiss the neck with your paper, using a spongey-type sanding block. You will have scads of white dust flying EVERYWHERE!!!. Move to 80, then 100, and when you get some pigmented dust, STOP!!!!
Dammit!!! I still smell like cotton candy!!!

I'm 99% sure that this is the same Floyd that came standard on Peavey wolfs. I've never had a problem with the bridge on a Wolfgang, so this is good quality for really cheap!

Exactly. It's a direct re & re with a Floyd, pretty much of any manufacture. The post locations are the same. I'm wondering however, where he mentions the intonation..... Most Floyd clones as well as originals provide more than enough room for intonation adjustment. Cam-5150, what's going on with it? Are you maxed out of adjustment on one or more of the saddles, and if so, is it sharp or flat? Or.... are you having stability issues with them not staying put when you lock down the screws and use the bar? I had that problem on the cast Schaller Floyds; the threads would strip out in the plate. They corrected this by installing knurled inserts after several years of complaints. My fix was going up one size in the screws, and taking my time retapping the larger holes. It works well. The slightly larger diameter hole also provides a little more surface area for the screw to bite into without stripping so easily. I can't imagine it being a neck problem, given the advent of CNC. I mean even some of the cheapest guitars on the market now have pretty decent intonation compared to say a decade ago.
