Default Dweezil Zappa mentions hearing new VH material direct from Ed.

    http://www.glidemagazine.com/article...ays-zappa.html

How did growing up around your father and the countless amazing musicians he employed change the course of your musical development?

The thing is, I could always tell that what my dad did was on a different level than other music that I heard, so I always had this sense of, you know, I could never do that. So the music that got me inspired to play guitar was different from my dad's music. My first biggest influences were Randy Rhoads and Eddie Van Halen. I never got to meet Randy Rhoads, but I did get to meet Eddie Van Halen. So seeing how he did things up close really changed my abilities quickly, because when you can see how somebody does something up close, if you're the type of person that's going to spend some time practicing, it's like I had all these images that were burned into my mind forever that started that whole thing.

It's kind of funny, because I've recently been spending some time with Eddie Van Halen after being out of touch for a while. He was playing me some new stuff from his record, and I was playing him some stuff that I had been working on for this project, you know, playing Frank's music. He actually came to the Jeff Beck show the other day too. But one thing that was actually a pivotal and hilarious thing to me was that I was showing him some stuff, these different ways I had worked out to play quintuplets, and he said "Uh, you lost me there. I don't even know what you're talking about. Who would have thought after all these years, you'd be giving me a guitar lesson." To me, that was hilarious because I couldn't have envisioned that myself, and also the flipside of him coming to a show of mine when I had been to so many of his. There he was, in the dressing room before we went on, and we saw him after the show and everything, and it's just such a role reversal. But it's definitely a strong and good memory for me because I think it would have to be really be rare for anybody to have the ability to have that kind of communication with the thing or the person that inspired you so much to begin with, and have this mentor type of relationship and have some common ground in a different way after all these years. It is a unique and cool experience to have

Is this from the past? Is Jeff Beck even playing anywhere around the LA area?

Check the date, the JB concert was 4/17. Pretty recent.

I dont doubt ed is working on stuff. Weather anybody else will hear it is the question.

Ya cool news. Just read this on the VHND.

I seriously doubt Dweezil would say it's "new stuff from his record" if Ed wasn't recording a new band release. Dweezil is no stranger to the music industry and Ed. I don't think he'd mistake recorded Ed noodlings as new stuff from his record.

Cool news. I hope we get it sooner than later. Just wanted to post my happy response before the sea of cynicism pours in for it's daily VH dump.

Dweezil has no reason to lie; it's the source (Ed) that I'm concerned about. He probably played some stuff of him noodling around and said it was new music. This doesn't mean it's ever going to be released.

While none of us were there to hear it but

    a) this info came from Dweezil
    b) Dweezil didn't fire Mike or get hooked on the Loon.

Therefore when he says he heard some "new stuff from his record", I don't believe its just Ed wanking on his sustainer. If he said "Eddie he is working on new songs" or that "he has 10 albums in the can" then you can put the Eddie filters on.

Now whether Dave is singing on it, Alex is playing drums or Wolfgang on bass is another thing. It could just be an Eddie Van Halen solo project a la VH3 but with Wolfgang singing. Who knows but I doubt its just him noodling.

These are all elements in a natural progression towards Ed becoming productive again. First, he sobered up and began making public appearance (behavior in direct contrast to the hermit persona he has adopted over the last decade or so). Now there are stories of Ed opening himself up to music other than his own (NIN, Jeff Beck concerts) and listening to / learning from other musicians (Dweezil). All of this points to a man who is not only reigning in his insecurities but who is also rediscovering his creative couriosity. I don't know whether we'll ever hear from "VH" again but, for better or for worse, I think Ed is far from finished. Bring it on, Ed. BRING. IT ON.

So Dweezil is ok but Ian Astbury is full of shit? I guess it depends on whether the comments are favorable or not.

Best answer and probably most accurate of the thread.
