Default PICK THE BEST OPENING TRACK

Pick the Best opening Track from the 10 studio releases through Balance.

Easily, it's "Mean Street" from FAIR WARNING for me as the best opening track on a Van Halen studio album.

Ive always liked "Mine all mine" as an opening track & thought it was awesome when they opened the 1993 RHRN shows with it.

Also the first time i heard "The Seventh Seal" i knew they would open the show with it.
I even knew they would have the recording of the monks - just had a feeling.

It's running with the devil hands down, as everyone in America went "what the hell/who the hell is THAT?" the first time they heard it.

But that being said, I am so sick of Van Halen I, I voted for And the Cradle Will Rock!
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Preferred pronouns: he/him/his

Hurricane Halen - Let's all gingery touch our sword tips!!!

I love Mean Street as an opening song, the way the guitar comes in is awsome.

I also love the seventh seal....once the band kicks in it's like getting smacked in the face.

Mean Street easily. Although it's close with RWTD and ATCWR too. But, I also happen to like the intro to Everybody Wants Some, even though it's not the opener on WACF.

Agreed! The horn sound leadng into the bass thump, high hat, and then piano keys(?) right before that riff comes in and kicks your teeth in. Van Halen has arrived, kicked in your front door, and drank all your booze!

It was tough to choose between RWTD and Mean Street but I chose RWTD. Gotta love the car horns into the bass as an intro.

Mean Street has a great intro as well and I like the song better but for an opening song to an album, RWTD tops them all.

Well, the thread is actually more about which album has the best opening song; than which song has the best opening...

Although it's not one of the choices, and I can't say I'd vote for it even if WACF and Fair Warning didn't exist, the tune "Tattoo" keeps growing on me.

When I first heard it, I thought it was pretty weak -- but now, between the chord changes heading into the chorus, the whole "put a spell on me" section, and the solo -- the songs's funky as hell.

It's an older thread bump, but I did vote for Mean Street.
Hard to argue with that fade in with its otherworldly funky slap/tap/mute pattern, into the insane & haphazard fretted notes and tapped harmonics. It's like nothing we've ever heard from Eddie, and by that time, we'd heard a LOT!!!

The way it segues into that haunting and growling feedback? Beautiful and insane at the same time. All this is even before the familiar main riffs kicks in.
    Killer.

"Van Halen was never about the singer..." - a very wise fan.
