Default Ian Astbury (The Cult) Slams Eddie Van Halen

Ian's always been a bit full of shit and still is but this story about going out with Eddie Van Halen is kinda funny and sounds typical for Eddie:

    http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/sun...-1225863955330

    or

    http://tinyurl.com/247c58a

    The relevant quote:

"I remember being out night - it was a very bizaare evening - with Eddie Van Halen telling me he'd created punk rock. We were both at a concert. The guy on stage was Arthur Lee, of (the 1960s rock band) Love. I turned to Eddie and said: 'Do you know who that guy is on stage?' He said: 'Ah, some black guy.' I said: 'That's Arthur Lee, of a band called Love. He started punk rock. Everything he did was recorded by Bruce Botnick and Paul Rothchild. They took that to The Doors, who influenced the Chocolate Watch Band, and Roky Erickson, and 13th Floor Elevators, and Stooges, and MC5. He started punk rock. You have nothing to do with punk rock. In fact, punk rock was about getting rid of people like you."

The point of punk rock was to get rid of inventive guitar players and songwriters? Well they failed.

Ian Astbury is a tool BTW and always has been a blowhard.

And that story sounds like total BS, and probably was nothing more than two drunk musicians saying stupid shit to each other all night.

Last time I saw that guy, The Cult was opening for Metallica. No wait, Queensryche was opening for Metallica, The Cult was warming up the crowd for Queensryche. And that was pretty much Ian Astbury's peak. With the exception of a Doors tribute on VH1.

Good tunes, though. Decent three-chord rockers.

I've been a huge fan of Ian's and The Cult, but Brett's right, this does sound like two drunk musicians running their mouths.

But hey, Ian and The Cult are putting out new music regularly and going on tour as well while Eddie is....uhh.......

LMAO! Sure Ian.....Eddie...... Van Halen, told you he invented punk rock! Ya sure. Ed's said a lot of stupid shit in his life but even HE wouldn't be stupid enough to profess his invention of punk rock!......And metal picks and EMF don't give you tongue cancer! Of course they do....Everyone knows that! Ever notice how a lot of these aging rockers tend to resort to this kind of anecdotal, sniping, to keep their wrinkly old asses relevant? Ed's no saint in that department either though. He's a veteran. Probably right; just a couple drunk dudes, but it sounds real far fetched. Even Ed in his earlier days described tunes like Loss of Control, and even ATBL as "Making fun of Punk". Doesn't exactly ring of something he'd care to take credit for.

I was going to point out ATBL as Eddie's kind of parody of punk. One of my favorite Van Halen songs though.

I think Ian is full of shit!

Who the hell knows if it's the truth or not. All I know is that depending on the time period, I wouldn't put anything past Eddie. We've seen enough of the Fucked up Beyond Recognition Eddie to know he can say some weird shit.

I hope Ian is wearing a cup!

The Cult....meh..........but as I recall it, Dave was the one who was always hanging out with the punk rockers, .. I don't think that scene ever influenced Eddie or vice versa

Hey, this is VH Links, so I'm gonna digress. The point of punk rock was to get rid of the dinosaurs, the superstars. It was to bring rock back to "street level" and to elevate once again the DIY ethic.

Funny story. I like Ian Assberry, and yeah, this story smacks of two waste cases chattering through a coke-and-booze-fueled, ego trip-inducing haze. ROCK AND ROLLLLLLLLLLL!!!

Yeah. Dave always had a little bit of a "left of the dial" mindset, which is something I've always liked about him. The whole beef he had with the Clash kinda perturbed me, but I think it was more about a band conducting and taking themselves too seriously than anything else. Dave could get away with hanging out with the punk rockers.

Eddie could never fit in with that crowd at all. He was always about playing, jamming, going someplace else with the music. Recall the story about Nirvana where Eddie wanted to jam with Kurt Cobain, but ol' KC "didn't jam". Ed was always an old soul in the modern world. Heck, Ed's an immigrant. He was raised with an old world attitude that most of us at the Links don't understand.

The point of punk rock was so Malcolm McLaren could make as much money as he possibly could.

Punk rock had a distinct uniform athletically and a distinct formula in how it sounded. It had nothing to do with the MUSIC. The pistols were half ok because they actually wrote reasonably catchy pop tunes. I guess the Clash wrote a decent ditty too.

Once you label something it is dead. I am always pissed when Van Halen are labeled as a hair band. We all know they were so much more than a hair band and they preceded that so called movement years before. Bands like Poison just grabbed hold of the most obvious visual appeal of Van Halen and ran with it.
