Default Camcorders - anyone have a clue?

So, I'm thinking about buying a new camcorder. Money is a severely mitigating/limiting factor. Plan to use it to record family stuff and sporting events - my son's games (football/baseball) and football games I coach. I've talked to some other coaches about it, but most aren't all that tech savvy, so I'm wondering if there's anyone on here that's a geek with this stuff.

I don't think HD is important - it's just not a priority. I've been told I must have decent optical zoom, and that image stabilization and ability to record a night game would be nice.

I've been told to go with the flash memory, as it's more convenient to load into a computer vs. the DV cassette models, and that the hard drive models get quirky around their software, can be tough to work with the footage.

I have no editing software - I'd probably use a coaching website to upload and edit vs. buying software. So the flash memory models being able to transfer to my PC via USB is a good thing. No Mac.

So far I've turned up the following - the Canon was recommended to me, the Samsung I just stumbled across with a great price, and I also stumbled across the Sony, nothing in particular about it except it's the model in my price range:

    Canon FS300

    Samsung SMX-F43

    Sony SX44

Anyone have a clue on this stuff?

I just picked up the JVC Everio. Not a bad little cam, and right around the same price range as the others there. It has dual flash memory. It's super easy to upload onto your computer. Very easy in general to use. it has a touch "laser" slider for selection options. Now the downside........if it matters to you at all, but may not be a factor. It has no mic input. It has an on board stereo mic which isn't half bad....does the job. It also has a still or 'snapshot" feature, but I'm less than impressed with it. The still images lack clarity, and seem to appear kind of like a slow shutter appearance, but hey....it's a camcorder for shooting movies, not pics. The other main drawback, and I've found this in a lot of the flash memory jobs, is a very slight jitter in the picture. I noticed this on multiple brands in various price ranges, so it's just something that will eventually be a thing of the past. Other than that it's a sweet little cam. It get's more use than any other camera I've had, mainly because of it's size. You can put it in your pocket; take it anywhere.
Just my little shill! haha. I'd say of your choices, go with the Canon, but I'd say check this one out too. They also have an HD version for not a ton more.

Thanks, I did see that one. I think I'm also looking for optical image stabilization, which may (or may not) have something to do with that jitter. Supposedly it's something that keeps the image from jostling.

    I use a Flip Ultra HD & it's awesome!

Mine records 2 hours and is VERY EASY TO USE.

The software is in the cam itself so all you do is plug it in to any computer or laptop and you can download the videos, edit them and post them to youtube or email them.

Here's a little video from the Flip of me driving around listening to a mix i was doing last week.

I have partied hardy in that there town. Nothing like getting wasted in the city and taking BART back to WC, your buddy passes out and of course it would just be rude to wake him up, so you let him continue on til Concord. And yes, of course it is the last train.

    LoL!

I just drove past the Walnut Creek Bart station 20 minutes ago.
Bart would be better if it ran later than midnight.

Thanks - but I need an optical zoom function as I will be filming football games from the press box. I was thinking about the flip to film practice from up close, but don't have the $ to do both.

Actually the jitter I refer to is a noticeable transition between frames. Not the stability of the image. It's just something that is inherent in digital flash camcorders. It has to do with processing. In a relatively calm scenario, it's not real noticeable, but just like the early HD TV's, in high action, bright , high contrast situations it becomes more noticeable. Not a huge deal really...I'm just hypercritical. Another couple years....these little issues won't exist. I did like the Canon as I said above. It also had the least amount of that jitter, plus they've been at digital photography for quite a while, so ahead of the game IMHO. Of all the cams mentioned, I'd sadly recommend the Sony the least. The picture quality is great, but honestly, I've owned two Sony's over the past three years, and both suffered from servo motor failures (controls autofocus and zoom). On the second camera, after getting it fixed, the mechanism totally failed! So...... yeah....take that for what it's worth. I'm not hard on my stuff either. I baby my gear. (well...except for guitars!)
