Default Wolfies: Could you order a factory tone knob on a USA special?

I can't recall seeing this before but ran across one and the owner claims it's factory installed.

Can anyone shed some light on this?
    yeah.......i'm still here.

I don't think so, but I am not 100% sure.

If you can post a link or photo I can likely tell you yes or no. If you were to get a quality and detailed photo of the inside of the control cavity I could almost definitely tell you yes or no.

To date I've never seen nor heard of a Wolfgang Special with a factory tone knob installed. But that doesn't mean it couldn't have happened on a custom shop model.

The flametops didn't come out until a few years after 1997. See if you can get a close up of the paper work. The serial number on the neck also doesn't match the 1997 year. Something seems fishy.

I guess this thread is as good as any to post this on...I was at the Lake of the Ozarks this weekend, we were just driving through a small town there, when we had seen a guitar shop in the town square. We stopped in, the sign on the door said cash or local checks only. I looked at the place and at first glance didn't see much, then walking up to the counter I saw it, a solid color gold Wolfgang Special on the counter priced at $300! I picked it up and noticed the serial number started with a 9! The switch was missing the knob...how hard is it to get one of those? I couldn't get the cash at the moment, but I'm considering making the 2 hour drive back for it in a week or two.

I talked to Steve Smith at Peavey. He said that a "Tone" mod would probably not be noted on the setup sheet. However, I am having the serial # run and they are going to get back to me. I will let you know.

I doubt Peavey would put 2 volume "knobs" on there. He could have easily switched that though. Ask him to open the cavity. That will tell you everything you need to know in my opinion. I don't use my tone even on my standards. Why would you put a tone on a special? I dunno...... just my opinion though.

All the american Wolfs started with a "9". THe switch is a standard throw switch cover. You can get one anywhere. Depending on condition, I would be in my car right now.

Shipped 9/28/2004. No notes of the tone mod, however they doubt it would have been stated anyway. I would venture to guess that the guy had the mod done after he bought it. You will be able to tell once you get it. Regardless, a tone knob is a tone knob is a tone knob. The positioning looks right, so if you want a special with a tone control, that could be the wolf for you....

No body even mentioned the neck pickup being upside down...... the guitar has been toyed with. Not a big deal, but just makes me even more sure now that the mod was done after...

Called the shop today. I'm sending him a check to hold it for me. Couldn't pass this one up at that price...

I was gonna say... The top on that one is amazing--probably a custom shop. Did Steve Smith indicate that?

The dude didn't know what he was talking about with regard to the year 1997; that was the copyright info on all of the paperwork. The build sheet--which he shows in one of the photos--would have the actual production date on it, and the serial number is reflective of one having been built in 2003 or 2004.

Yup--the top pickup was turned around, and the pickup switch tip was replaced with a white or cream piece. Though the placement of the tone knob (volume knob?) is very close to where they put them on standard models, it is not factory. The custom shop would only have installed a tone knob on a Special per very specific order by a customer and NOT on one of their project models.

Basically, this is a nice Wolfgang Special, but it has had some mods.

Outside of the double knobs there is nothing that would make me think this was a custom shop model. I have four specials with one being a custom shop that had all black hardware-tuners,bridge,stoptail and pups and was in a one off color called Natural Burst and boy does that guitar sound different and wicked. The specials with a flamed maple top were really beautiful guitars though they seemed to make 4X the amount of them in Amber or maybe it just seems that way as that is what ebay has been flooded with the past 15 months.

I would believe that the guy did pay $1,200 at one time for that guitar before the latest drop in prices as Purple does not come up that often and that is a really nice top. Well it sold for $861 and I would belive whoever bought it should be real happy with that purchase.
