    RIP: 3.5 inch floppy disk

"Sony announced on April 23rd that they will be discontinuing sales of the classic 3.5 inch floppy disk in Japan in 2011. The news marks a major end to a nearly three decade history of the disk type that the company helped to pioneer.

According to Sony, they introduced the 3.5 inch floppy disk size to the world in 1981, and began sales within Japan in 1983. Sony had shipped approximately 47 million disks within the country at its peak around the year 2000, but that number had fallen to around 8.5 million by 2009, Sankei News reported.

In 2008 Sony accounted for around 40% of the world’s market share in 3.5 inch floppy disks, Nikkei wrote; within Japan, Sony has held about 70% of the market share in recent years, the Asahi added.

Sony will stop sales within Japan in March of 2011, and with the exception of a few niche markets such as in India, the company’s worldwide sales finished in March of this year, the Mainichi stated. Sony ceased its outsourced production of the 3.5 inch floppy in 2009. It is also noted that most other major manufacturers of the disk type have already withdrawn from the market entirely.

Lack of demand was stated as the major reason for the decision, with many pointing to the rapid expansion of other media saving methods, such as CDs, DVDs, and USB drives, as well as a significant decrease in floppy disk-supporting hardware.

Beyond the floppy, the 3.5 inch size is still used for Sony’s magneto optical disks."

Except for my 10-year-old PC in the front room that's about to be retired, I don't think I have a 3.5 drive on any of the other computers in the house!

what can they hold? Just a few hundred MB right? Nowadays you can get a multi-gig flash stick...it's just crazy how far storage has come and how limitless the skies are with it.
    Stay out of it, dude.

No, they are only 1.44 MB per floppy. The older 5.25" floppies, the ones you could actually bend, only held 1.2 MB. I've been in IT since '86 and I recall installing one of our database applications on a server in the old days and it shipped on 70 3.5" floppy diskettes!

Just for laughs I converted my MP3 of Me Wise Magic to a 32 Kbps Windows Media audio file (32 being the worst quality). Now that song is a little over 6 minutes long, but the converted file ended up being 1.45 MB. So it just barely wouldn't fit on a 1.44 MB floppy. But a shorter song at the worst quality would fit on one floppy.

When the 3.5" 1.44 MB plastic shell floppy came out it was a big improvement over the larger sized 5.25" 1.2 MB floppies. Those 5.25" floppies would actually bend and they would become damaged easily. I swear every 10 to 20 times you would try to access something on them the files would be corrupted. I recall using the original Norton Utilities many times to patch up corrupted files from 5.25" floppies. To go way back, in 1985 I used to work on an IBM System 34 mainframe and the backup was made to a magazine (holder) of 8" size floppies. At 4:15 PM I would load the magazine and sit there watching/listening for problems and around 5 PM the backup was done. Then it was off to happy hour... it was a simpler time.

Now that's too cool... in 1980 I had a '68 GTO with 8-track and in 1983 I had a '79 Trans Am also with 8-track. For both I had a few 8-track tapes but I was mainly using one of those slide-in adapters that would play cassettes. The only 8-tracks I can find in my storage boxes now are The Beatles White Album and an Air Supply album (blech). I bought the Air Supply tape since some girl I was dating back then liked that band.

I've never used one! In the old days, my Commodore Vic-20 would have a tape deck attached to it for storage purposes. That was back in the early '80's when everything was prehistoric. I then got out of computers and didn't get another one until 2001 and went straight to CD burning. I'm now onto external hard drives. I guess I won't miss 'em!
