Default Next build - a Bee with a twist - Input requested

Thought you guys might want to spend some time being constructive so I'll let you help me define my next build.

Kyle just shipped me a beautiful tank of a northern ash Bee-style. The twist is I asked him to drill for a Gotoh stoptail bridge.

I want something a little different this time. I've got accurate replicas of Frankie B&W, current Frank replica, and 5150. I'm ready for my own axe. I've got heavy ash with FR and Fender trems so I thought a stop tail would be a nice change.

    Here's what I know I want:

    rosewood fretboard
    brass nut
white body, black hardware. I like the contrast between the dark fretboard/hardware and white body
    unfinished neck

Here's what I may want but am looking for suggestions:

    tree of life inlays
either solid white or a subtle Bee stripe paint job (pearl white stripes with white base)

    Up in the air

    headstock
    urethane clearcoat
    neck wood species

    Here's the body:

    Let the suggestions fly

    Cheers

that is a really gorgeous cut of wood...seems like a shame to cover it in paint!

I agree and am open to that. An oil finish would be cool.

I had an idea a while ago to stain in stripes a slightly different shade but all grain would show. I'm on this sort of subtle hint of EVH influence but make it my own at the same time.

That would be WAY cool. Stripe it just like the BumbleBee but do it with stain instead of paint. AWESOME idea.

i agree. I think that would be a very nice, very elegant and subtle tribute to EVH striped guitars...a very welcomed departure from the same copy-cat stuff we see all the time.

I find that mother nature does the best guitar work when it comes to sound and aesthetics and that body you have is a great example of how beautiful wood can just be by itself.

My vote is to do something that will really accentuate and honour the beauty of that wood, not hide or negate it!

Ash is a pain in the ass to fill. That being said, if you were to go the stain stripe route, wash coat it in cheap lacquer, grain fill with darker grain filler (the wash coat prevents staining of the wood), seal, THEN stripe and tint your clear with the colour of choice. Just a suggestion...

Alright...I've been keeping this a secret for quite some time. I ordered a San Demon from Kyle. I've always wanted a natural wood (or just stained) guitar body. I've looked at some techniques and thought how cool would it be to do a Frankenstein striped guitar using just natural wood stains? I call it the "Franken-Stain". Not that I necessarily think you should do this Kevin, but a guinea pig would be nice...lol.

    Ha, you're funny Mike...

I lost sleep over this finish last night. Right now its a toss up between taping the body after grain fill and using ebony stain for untaped areas (sort of a stain version of black and yellow), or visa versa, which would be much more difficult to do.

I was worried about the stain wicking and not having smooth edges but I really want a subtle hint of striping, not a drastic contrast so I'm less worried about it.

    Sensing some test work ahead...

Paints not out of the question either. I agree that wood is too pretty to paint but I see the beauty in all wood (well, most) and if i really wanted to show off the grain of wood, I'd probably select something fancier than ash.

still collecting data while I wrap up my 5150 project. Keep it coming!

    Cheers

If you seal it, then use a clear tinted with your colour of stain, you shouldn't have problems with the stain wicking and unsmooth edges. Tinted clears leave a uniform finish, which is why A LOT of finishers forego the traditional method of staining bare wood as it can sometimes leave disastrous results of grabbing harder in some areas more than others.

curious why you suggested to wash coat it before filling the grain. does it matter which comes first?

Its suggested to use a wash coat of sealer so the grain filler doesnt stain or discolor anything surrounding the grain. In a nutshell, so the filler only gets into the grain.

'cos you will never get the stain of the dark grain filler off without nearly getting rid of the grain filler.

When I found out how the Gibsons were grain-filled, I thought I would go to town. Let me just say that it took a LOT of sanding to get that dark brown off of the mahogany, then it still was grainy. Then a respected guitar finisher friend of mine told me "you're supposed to coat it in about three coats of cheap lacquer before you grain fill, you dumb ass!!!". Between the burlap levelling and the sanding, the wash coat did what it was supposed to do: dark grain fill whilst keeping the light colour of the mahogany.
