Default Iceland Volcano Ash Closes UK Airports

Icelandic volcano ash cloud: No planes to leave UK before 7am tomorrow morning

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/travel/ar...close-7am.html

A marie celeste atmosphere has descended at UK airports this afternoon after planes were banned from flying into British airspace until at least 7am tomorrow morning.

Planes were grounded at midday today as a cloud of volcanic ash spread across the country. Millions of travellers returning from Easter holidays or hoping to jet away for the weekend were told their flights had been cancelled.

More than 500,000 passengers a day fly in and out of the UK on around 5,300 daily flights. Experts say the chaos - which is already spreading across Europe - could last for days.

Cancellations will have a particularly disruptive effect on families returning from the Easter holidays who were due to fly back to Britain this weekend.

And the closures will have more effect on British travellers than the chaos after the September 11 terror attacks. Although American skies were closed for two days, British airspace remained open.

Experts say the ash could take between 24 and 36 hours to drift across the UK if there is no volcanic activity.

By mid-afternoon airports across Britain were already deserted. Heathrow was eerily quiet.

A spokesman for Britain's Civil Avation Authority today said the closure was 'unprecedented' and that the fall-out could go on for days - with the knock on effect adding to the turmoil.

'It all depends which way the wind blows - literally - and whether there is another volcanic eruption,' said CAA spokesman Richard Taylor.

He noted: 'It's absolutely unprecedented. We can't think of any incident of volcanic ash which has affected UK airspace in this way.

'It is worse than the 9-11 terror attack. That stopped transatlantic air traffic. But even then, flights to the Continent and within the UK continued.'

A spokesman for the National Air Traffic Service said: 'This is extremely rare to have a natural disaster affect British airspace in this way.

'It is very difficult to look back through all the records but there is nothing in living memory that compares.

On September 11 U.S. airspace was closed so that obviously had a knock-on effect.

'We continue to monitor the situation with the Met Office and work closely with airline customers and adjoining countries.'
Business Secretary Lord Mandelson defended the move to ground all flights.

He said: 'Nobody in business or indeed the travelling public will welcome the decision to close down UK airspace from midday to 6pm.

'But the safety of people has to come first. That comes above every other consideration.

'It's inconvenient but when you have a volcanic dust cloud coming over the UK in this way we have got to protect the travelling public.'

Air traffic controllers were forced to shut British airspace after the eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland yesterday spewed massive clouds of ash thousands of feet into the sky.

It is the second time the volcano has erupted in a month. But the second explosion was 10 to 20 times more powerful than the one on March 20. Eyjafjallajokull had previously been silent for almost 200 years.

NOTE.. if this fucker blows in June I shall be most pissed!

As soon as I heard about this, especially regarding the location of the volcano on a SW glacier, the first thing that sprang to mind was this ....

The volcano will melt the ice (cue flooding - already happening) but will also weaken the rest of the glacier. If this thing blows in a big way, we could have massive parts of glacier breaking off into the sea.

So my thoughts were "Are happy surfers going to be lining up on Atlantic shores or could we theoretically get huge, destructive waves spreading out from Iceland?"

    The mind boggles ....
A man could lose himself in a country like this.

I tell you what, hearing about this glacier reminds me of all the hot women from Iceland. I think the 18 months I was stationed there, I saw about 10 fat or ugly women under the age of 35.

After 35 the lava dust gets to them and potmarks their face. They change into trolls.

You don't want to be flying a plane through any amount of volcanic ash....If anyone is aware of the show Mayday then they have probably seen this near disaster covered.

    What a cool pic.

Was reading about this current eruption in Iceland and how it, "MIGHT" affect the earth's atmosphere. Current thinking that as of now, this volcano hasn't spit enough ash into the atmosphere to change the climate very much, as compaired to Krakatoa's eruption in 1883, Mt. Pinatubo in the Philippines in 91 and Mt. Tambora in 1816. Krakatoa erupted so violent that the volcano actually blew apart and circled the earth with a haze of smoke and ash that lasted for months. In 91 when Pinatubo exploded, it pushed over 20 megatons of ash into the atmosphere and it actually cooled the earth about 1degree Fahrenheit. Same was said about Mt. Tambora in Indonesia

Volcanologist aren't sure what the future holds for this volcano in Iceland, but some believe this eruption could possibly last up to 2 years. If this is the worse case sernario, you have to wonder how this will affect the global economy in the short term.

I also saw that when Mt. St. Helen's blew her top in 81, compaired to the other 3 eruptions I mentioned above, St. Helen's was like compairing a firecracker to 5 sticks of dynamite. Holy shit............

Powerful stuff on this planet. But, you good people of Europe should witness some really beautiful sunsets over the coming months!

This is such a pain in the arse. My co-worker is waiting to find if she can go on vacation to Spain on Sunday... she is meant to be going for 2 weeks! And one of our practice nurses is stranded in Boston unable to come home. Nightmare!

Oh and in Scotland, anyone with history of asthma and COPD are being asked to stay indoors as ash is beginning to settle on the ground.

PS.. this better be gone by June or Mt St Helens will be nothing to the angel's wrath!
