Default Mike Anthony: We weren’t actually making a lot of money until Sammy joined the band

It was in the Michael Anthony forum, but I thought this part of the new interview shed a very interesting light on the Dave/Sam transition, which I never heard before (even Sammy never mentioned it):

"We weren’t actually making a lot of money until Sammy joined the band, and we didn’t know any better because we were getting to live and do whatever the hell we wanted. I was able to buy a nice Porsche. Then we started to make a little bit of money, but we still didn’t have a really good contract until Sammy came in and brought his manager with us. He went in and said, “What the fuck. Let’s redo your contract.” Then all of a sudden it was really poppin’. We would look around and a lot of the guys at Warner Bros. got their summer houses and nice vacations, and I guess we were paying for all that."

So there you go, Dave fans, not understanding the love for Sam. He and his manager got them a new contract with Warner and everyone was making a lot more cash. Tends to explain why the rest of VH was praising Sam in the press so much, at least until 1995. Sure it was about the music and the friendship, but I'm sure the fact that he helped them put their ducks in a row was a factor too.

I think how they were increasing in popularity with each release up through the 80s had more to do with it.

No doubt Sam brought business acumen to the band, but you don't get paid $1M for one show and struggle for money unless you are a monetary idiot.

Half their money was probably going up their noses, that didn't help any.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Preferred pronouns: he/him/his

    MA should STFU.

Wonder how Diamond DLR faired financially when he quit VH and went solo.

VH lost some fans when Diamond DLR left the band, but gained more "pop music" fans with songs like WCTBL, LWI, WIL, etc.
    DLR, circa 2001:

"Hey this is David Lee Roth and I promised you the news and here's the news.

About a year ago myself and the great Van Halen band played together once or twice and it sounded amazing!

In the following several months Edward and I, Edward Van Halen and me, David Lee Roth, created some of the most amazing, phenomenal - the hands fell off the clock ladies and gentleman and we wrote three astonishing tunes.

That was last July (2000) and since then I haven't been up to the studio, we haven't really been in touch and we haven't made any music, but I am holding forth, I'm in the shape of my life and I got the high note - I'm ready to go.

And I am positive for the future ladies and gentleman.

Stay tuned and I'll tell you what the future brings..."

I believe Dreidel's right. It's not like Sammy walked into a band that wasn't going anywhere. Van Halen had been climbing steadily since Feb 10th, 1978. I'm also not going to say Sammy was riding on anyone's coat tails, either: he worked hard with Van Halen, and I feel that band earned everything they received.

Sammy's maneuvering to have Ed Leffler be their manager was one of the greatest things to happen to Van Halen. Ed Leffler was an excellent, extremely shrewd manager. The band told the same story about not having money back in an interview in 89-91'ish. Van Halen didn't have great contracts in the first place; the absence of a progressive album sales royalty rate - pretty much a standard contract inclusion since the 70's - was absent from their contracts [the original and one major re-negotiation in the early '80's] until the late Mr. Leffler renegotiated it. Heck, just go read Chapters 19 & 20 from Sam's book to find out some of the details of what he did.

The way the band talked it up, Ed Leffler was a genius. He could get additional money for the band without being unethical or stepping on toes. Noel Monk was a decent manager, but from what information we have, he wasn't as good a manager as Leffler. Heck...he got advances from promoters around the country and they loved him.

"The shit I read on this site." -- Dave's Dreidel (Nov 6th, 2013)

"Don't ever confuse talent with fame." -- Bob Lefsetz

"There's very little greatness in this world, but in the crucible of quality there's a special corner reserved for Van Halen." -- Bob Lefsetz

There's no question Van Halen had better management when Sammy was in the band.

Ed stated VH signed probably the worst deal in the music biz when Warner Bros. first brought them on board. Ed mentioned in the early days the band would pump a lot of money back into the stage production and didn't start making significant dough until around Fair Warning. Ed recalled after selling 2 million albums of their debut (and being out on the road for roughly a year) the band was still in debt to Warner Bros. At that point the boys in VH knew Warner Bros. screwed them.

I think you can find in one of the Guitar Mag 1982 interview clips on Youtube of Ed, where he says off the record how they're getting fucked over by WB.

Wasn't playing games...I'm not that clever. First thing I thought of when I saw your post was Danniels..the worst manager they had.

FWIW, Leffler was obviously loved and respoeced by all in VH and was obviously sorely missed.
