    Default Microsoft Security Essentials

Has anyone tried this program? I've had Windows Live OneCare since I bought this laptop, and my subscription is expiring, but on further review I've found that Microsoft has discontinued this program as of like, last year (I'm always the last to know) and so I saw that the Microsoft Security Essentials, which basically has replaced it, is free, so I'm thinking, "why not?" From what I've read, it's not a resource hog and seems to do about as well as any other antivirus, but nothing beats the (hopefully unbiased) opinions of my fellow linkers. So, whaddaya think?

Good web browsing discipline will beat out antivirus software any day of the week. If you are using something other than IE you can cut down on the worry on viruses/trojans a lot. Firefox and Chrome are very safe, and fast. And if you stick to normal websites (no porn, cracked software searches), you will be OK as well.

Also, if you use a web based email system, like gmail, hotmail, yahoo, etc etc, then they automatically scan for viruses through the emails.

So if you want to use something, use whatever you want. A lot of people like the AVG antivirus too. I haven't used an antivirus since 2002 and have never had a virus.

Yes, +1 for AVG, and you can get the free version at free.avg.com. Also make sure your Windows Firewall is turned on since the free AVG is anti-virus only. I also agree on using Firefox instead of IE. Finally, should malware problems arise use the free SuperAntiSpyware scanner at www.superantispyware.com (good idea to install it ahead of time). Others have reported that Malwarebytes is also very good at removing malware- available at www.malwarebytes.org.

I saw Windows Live OneCare on a few computers and IMPO (in my professional opinion, haha) it was a real resource hog. I would be wary of any product that Microsoft offers for anti-virus/malware protection. They have a hard enough time keeping the core operating system stable.

I installed it on my nieces computer after she got a nasty virus that none of the good repair/remove options worked. Tried spyware doctor, super anti spyware, spybot S&D, adaware, cc cleaner and hijack this. It kept coming back even after several attempts. Ended up reformatting the drive and I installed Security Essentials as her security suite and she hasn't had a single issue. It's been about 4 months and all is still good. So in my opinion it seems to be a pretty good security software.

I used to use AVG on our computers but switched over to Avast free version, AVG seemed to be headed into Bloatware territory - they may have pared it back again, I don't know, Avast has been fine though.

But yeh, decent free virus scanner, firefox and a little commonsense and viruses don't seem to be a problem at all

I have a Question.... I am using Firefox, and my Anti-Virus, Firewall, and Spy Ware Removal software suite by CA (Computer Associates) is provided by the cable company.

Should I just go ahead and delete Microsoft IE Explorer from my computer since I'm using Firefox in it's place ? ? ?

It's never a bad idea to have a backup browser available, just in case. Depending on your version of Windows, you can simply uninstall it via add/remove, etc., then 'turn windows features on and off'.

I run Chrome and have run FF in the past. When they glitch on occasion, it's good to have a backup in place. Just MHO.

    True.
I used to use AVG for about 2 years, but it just got to be too much of a hog. I let the license expire and went to MSE and have been fine. Good browsing and a little caution are all it takes to be safer.

Wouldnt worry bout it mate, as Yerfdog said, never hurs to have a backup in case you run across a fussy site. Install chrome and have a play with that too, it's come along quite nicely and is very fast.

Our IT guy at work said to use it so I put it on my home PC along with AVG. It picks up more bugs so far then AVG.
