I would say that depends whether you're going to clearcoat that
fucker or not. You can certainly get it with rattlecans, Ed certainly
did. But uh, what's his - Dino, did some amazing shit and some other
guys and I recall them saying a professionaly spray setup will certainly
yield better and more consistent (not to mention long lasting results -
    only IF you're clearing it).

If you're going for an authentic beater I'd say Krylon is fine, period. That
Eddie Van Halen tribute site (forget what it's called) had lots of info and if
you do searches on here guys like Rols and other put up shit about stripe
sizes and what not. I suggest searching the forums and that EVH tribute
site. From my experience, if you can get er done without wind being in the
picture, no worries...(given that you size your stripes right and do your
    detective work/comparisons in advance)
    FUCK THE DUMB SHIT!!!!

Don't touch the new Krylon...feels like RUbber even when dried. Go for Acrylic, or Car Paint. Duplicolor is the best people seem to used. i know it's the only thing i use on the franky and 5150

There is some great advice at www.halen.com

There are tons of helpful threads with tons of photos and how too's and whatever.
If you have nothing nice to say about Eddie Van Halen, you're at the right website. - Me (A few years ago)

"People take Van Halen much more seriously than we do" - David Lee Roth (1980's)

"I don't sit on the end of your bed while you're trying to make a living" - David Lee Roth (1988)

"For some reason people love to complain about everything. The internet has made it easy for people to do that. Shut the fuck up and get a life, or show me how good you can do it."- Edward Van Halen

"A lot of people ask me which Van Halen singer was better. You can't compare them. It's like asking which guitarist is better. Nobody is better than anybody. Every player is their own person."-Edward Van Halen

"I do like Eddie Van Halen as a player. He gets it right quite often." -Paul McCartney

Also agree with the Duplicolor choice. Used it on mine and it worked great.

This may be late since you've decided on the paint but it was discussed in depth with actual duplicolor paint names (Super Red II), types, etc for painting a frankenstrat:

The one thing I seem to somehow miss is getting the body prepped for the paint. Like what do you do prior to painting? Sand? What grit of paper? Primer? How many coats? What kind? anyone?
Eddie must think I'm a BOZO to want to drop THAT much on one of his new Charvel Guitars!

Make sure you wait AT LEAST a few days between painting and taping. I've used duplicolor on a frankie, and taped after like a day and a half or 2 day dry time... bad idea. The tape I was using stuck onto the paint a little....

Anyway, I buffed it out and it turned out a fantastically realistic looking 'old beat up guitar', but it was a pain in the butt to get the goo off of the body... just take your time.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but here's a rough guide for paint a Frankenstrat:

    • finish sand body - 320 grit

    • spray deft sanding sealer - 2 coats (light scuff between)

    • spray multiple coats of black using level block sander o remove surface paint leaving the paint in the grain to fill (or almost fill) heavy grain (ASH)

    • spray final coat of black - wait a few days or one week (longer the better) scuff with gray scotchbrite or 400 grit paper

    • tape, spray white. (see line above) Relic, tape, spray red. Keep the red semi-opaque or plan to thin with steel wool in too heavy.

Keep the amount of paint on the thin side - just enough to give a good coverage. Duplicolor works well. The colors are listed in the guide above.

Just make sure you spend time filling in the grain. My grain looked great and then it started to shrink and shrink... Here's what it ended up looking like:
