    Default Eddie, Sammy, Van Halen - some soundscan sales figures

    OK, so I just looked at this and realised just how much meaningless jargon I'm about to post, having used far more ridiculous sales figures than even I'm used to juggling in my head which has always been curious about these things. But hey, if you ever need a master resource on Van Halen sales - this is the nearest you're gonna get

    As y'all know, I'm obsessed with statistics - they intrigue me. So I often quote meaningless sales figures at all of you.

    In the interest of the handful of you that might be curious, I read UKMix.org's forums, the best repository on the net for sales figures. Van Halen stuff's thin on the ground, but I've picked up what I can about their US figures from the VH thread for any who want to read just because...you might

    Remember Soundscan sales don't include those from Columbia Music House (which in the 1990s stocked all Van Halen's stuff and was where a lot of music was sold), and is for actual sales not shipments. i.e. shipments will always be significantly higher than sales unless an album is out of print and only available online in which case the figure will go up more evenly. This means recent albums have far lower shipment sums, whereas albums released in the 80s/90s would often ship far more than they'd sell, based on expectations.

    Soundscan sales were implimented in mid 1991 though not widespread all over the country until the end of the year. Anything from late '91 onwards it's the total sales.

    Van Halen (soundscan totals date end of May 2006 unless otherwise noted)
    * 1978 - Van Halen - certified for shipment of 10 million in 1996, has scanned 2.09 million copies [January 2009]
    * 1979 - Van Halen II - certified for shipment of 5 million in 2004, has scanned 0.695 million copies
    * 1980 - Women & Children First - certified for shipment of 3 million in 1994, has scanned 0.591 million copies
    * 1981 - Fair Warning - certified for shipment of 2 million in 1994, has scanned 0.49 million copies
    * 1982 - Diver Down - certified for shipment of 4 million in 1998, has scanned 0.536 million copies
    * 1984 - 1984 - certified for shipment of 10 million in 1999, has scanned 1.347 million copies
    * 1986 - 5150 - certified for shipment of 6 million in 2004, has scanned 1.167 million copies
    * 1988 - OU812 - certified for shipment of 4 million in 2004, has scanned 0.555 million copies
    * 1991 - For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge - certified for shipment of 3 million in 1994, has scanned 2.953 million copies (released ahead of the soundscan system's widespread use)
    * 1993 - Right Here Right Now [double] - certified for shipments of 1 million in 1993, has scanned 0.717
    * 1995 - Balance - certified for shipments of 3 million in 2004, has scanned 2.032 million copies
    * 1996 - Best Of Volume I - certified for shipments of 3 million in 2004, has scanned 3.488 million copies [November 2009]
    * 1998 - Van Halen III - certified for shipment of 0.5 million in 1998, has scanned 0.514 million copies
    * 2004 - Best of Both Worlds [double] - certified for shipmenet of 0.5 million in 2004, has scanned 0.633 million copies

    So Right Here Right Now still hasn't sold the initial run of 1 million shipments, but some albums are definitely due a re-cert. For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge must be due 4x Platinum at this stage. If not, it's incredibly close to it.

    David Lee Roth (soundscans only go up to January 2000, but they're so low mostly I doubt much has changed)
    * 1985 - Crazy From The Heat - certified for 1 million shipments in 1985, has scanned 0.804 million copies
    * 1986 - Eat 'Em & Smile - certified for 1 million shipments in 1986, has scanned 0.77 million copies
    * 1988 - Skyscraper - certified for 1 million shipments in 1988, has scanned 0.36 million copies
    * 1991 - A Little Ain't Enough - has scanned 0.33 million copies
    * 1994 - Your Filthy Little Mouth - has scanned 0.062 million copies
    * 1996 - Best Of - has scanned 0.086 million copies
    * 1998 - DLR Band - has scanned 0.052 million copies

    I recall an interview sometime around '89 where Roth said Skyscraper had sold over 2 million copies. I don't know if he meant stateside or globally, but given how hard global sales are to get, and given what a high percentage of VH's sales are in America, I'd guess he meant US. Plus, his solo career was popular enough that I'd have thought that by the end of the 1980s, those 3 releases were due re-certification. I read somewhere ALAE has Platinum-level sales and given the initial release sales were pre-Soundscan, it's quite possible that optimistic shipments (since it was at the time when a lot of artists suddenly declined in sales) were high enough for this.

    Sammy Hagar (soundscans same date as David Lee Roth ones)
    * 1973 - Montrose (with Montrose) - certified for 0.5 million shipments in 1977, certified for 1 million shipments in 1986
    * 1979 - Steet Machine - has scanned 0.018 million copies
    * 1981 - Standing Hampton - certified for 1 million shipments in 1992, has scanned 0.154 million copies
    * 1982 - Rematch has scanned 0.005 million copies
    * 1982 - Three Lock Box - certified for 0.5 million shipments in 1983, has scanned 0.79 million copies
    * 1983 - Live 1980 has scanned 0.001 million copies
    * 1984 - Through The Fire (with HSAS) - has scanned 0.014 million copies
    * 1984 - VOA - certified for 1 million shipments in 1985, has scanned 0.99 million copies
    * 1987 - I Never Said Goodbye - certified for 0.5 million shipments in 1987, has scanned 0.045 million copies
    * 1992 - Turn Up The Music - has scanned 0.01 million copies
    * 1994 - Unboxed - certified for 0.5 million shipments in 1995, has scanned 0.385 million copies
    * 1997 - Marching To Mars - has scanned 0.356 million copies [July 2003]
    * 1999 - Red Voodoo - has scanned 0.365 million copies [July 2003]
    * 2000 - Ten 13 - has scanned 0.129 million copies
    * 2002 - Not 4 Sale - has scanned 0.048 million copies [July 2003]
    * 2003 - Hallelujah has scanned 0.02 million copies [July 2003, very new release]
    * 2006 - Livin' It Up - has scanned 0.052 million copies [November 2008]
    * 2008 - Cosmic Universal Fashion - no idea about total sales, but it scanned 0.008 million copies in week of release.

    Given these figures are years out of date, I reckon Marching To Mars cannot be far off Gold certification now. Red Voodoo had only been out for 9 months too, that was still shifting units. "Mas Tequila" was still quite a new single when these figures came out.

    Chickenfoot
    2009 - Chickenfoot - has scanned 0.763 million copies [March 2010]

    The 90s sales figures really show how much of a more popular recording artist Sammy Hagar became. Really eclipsed David Lee Roth. And what a gigantic success Chickenfoot's been relative to the decline of the music industry. Sales have declined 45% in the last 10 years. So if this was set in direct competition to Van Halen III, it would have easily passed the Platinum mark.

    Interesting.

    I would have thought Eat Em and Smile was more popular than that.

    Chickenfoot did exceptionally well considering the current landscape.
