    Bummer!

Alex's passing actually got a mention on ABC Evening News, along with Fess Parker.

Oh, 47...great song! Great song! I shit my pants when I bought The Replacements' Pleased To Meet Me. Wow! A song about "Alex Chilton". These guys got it. These bastards nailed it: too bad the rest of the world didn't pay any attention en masse.

    ------- ------- -------

The first time I ever heard Alex Chilton, I didn't know who it was. I heard "The Letter" by the Box Tops sometime in the 70's on a top 40 station. Great song...still one of my favorite singles from the 60's. I loved it, truly, but I never knew who it was.

I first heard of Big Star when someone - I believe it was R.E.M. - named dropped them in an interview in the mid-80's. Well, I liked the band that name-dropped Big Star, so I figured I'd check them out. Found the Number 1 Record album (vinyl) at the local record store and bought it for $ .25. I liked it and fell in love with the song "Thirteen", but where was this song "September Gurls" that got the raves?

I asked Reuben (the dude behind the counter) on my next visit to Barstow Music: "Where's this song?" He tells me to wait, disappears in the back room, and gives me an old Certron C-60 cassette tape. "First song, side two. You can have it: I have the record and I already made another tape of it." Very cool!

When I got home, I put it in my tape player and listened to "September Gurls" about 15 times. I loved it. It was such a great song! Turns out there were lots of other great songs on that mix tape, but I liked "September Gurls" the best.

    ------- ------- -------

Alex Chilton and Big Star were never, ever my favorites. I liked them a lot, but they only influenced me a little. The big thing was that they opened my eyes to the roots of some of the artists I did like and made me a little less willing to compromise, since Alex never compromised his vision. Alex Chilton - especially AC in Big Star - was like the Pixies or The Replacements: loved by hipster critics, sold very few records, but influenced many artists who went on to sell lots of records.

    Rest in peace, sir.
