Default Guitar Legends Top 5 Album: No Van Halen!

New Guitar Legends features the top 5 album in rock and shockingly no VH: GNR, ACDC, Floyd, Led Zep, Hendrix.

It's significant coz it's published by the guys that do Guitar World, usually huge VH fan. I think VH's current antics are starting to affect the way their legacy is viewed, sadly.

He would easily be top 5 if not guaranteed #1 if not for the last 15 years.

Hendrix, Led Zeppelin - sure, I can see that, no problem. Pink Floyd - eh, sure, why not. But picking AC/DC and GNR over Van Halen? Nonsense.

There is no Hendrix album that should be ahead of a classic VH album if. Sorry. No fucking way.

He's in the top based soley on his past. Nothing he could do in the future will rival what he has done in the past. There must be an ac/dc interview coming up or something.

Sure the Van Halen brothers are two of the best musicians ever.

They've also done a ludicrous amount of stuff to drag the name of their band through the mud.

I'm not saying that to offend anyone. I'm saying it because I believe it's the cold, hard truth.

Oh, I completely agree. I'm just saying the media and the consumer public are so fickle that I'm sure they've let the mess that has been VH the last 15 years color their perspective. There is no way he shouldn't be top 5 - it's really without question.

Choosing Back In Black over VH1 or Fair Warning isn't something I'd personally do, but it certainly isn't nonsense.

VH should have been in over GNR, most definitely. But I can't argue with the other 4.

The thing is, Eddie is considered great for his riffs and his body of guitar work. I don't think any one ALBUM by VH is considered "great" by the masses of critics. "Influential" "Popular" sure....but are any of the VH albums considered "great" as a standalone work?

The cover songs really hurt as well IMO.

VH1 is considered great because of Eruption and the influence of a new style at the time. It represents the beginning, but as a start to finish CD does it really fit? You Really Got Me and Ice Cream Man are covers and it is interesting to look objectively at just how short time wise that CD is. VH 1 is 35 minutes long with 2 covers. So only 20 something minutes of original material. Metallica Black Album by comparison is 62 minutes.

The only other one that really could be considered is 1984...and I think...rightly or wrongly...the keyboard poppiness of Jump keeps some guitarcentric critics from putting the CD quite in that category. I'm not saying it is right, or that I agree, just trying to think about rationales.

I just don't think VH is known for one album in particular...though again, you can argue 1984. I personally am not a huge fan of Back in Black by AC/DC and MUCH prefer 1984 (or any VH album..but that's me). But again I think it is the comparison of Jump to Hell's Bell's/You Shook Me that gets them...just a guess.

At least they didn't try to put Nevermind or 10 on there

Back In Black isn't even AC/DC's best album. Yeah it was popular. Give me "Highway To Hell" or "Powerage" anyday.

VH is just a forgotten band...you can thank Ed for that.

Other than a handful of songs from other albums, Back In Black is the only AC DC album I can stomach top to bottom. I hate that band but love Back In Black. That album has an insane amount of great guitar work.

VH with Dave ('78-'84) - The best years....the "real" VH.
VH with Sam ('86-'96) - Incredible era....."We have renamed this town 'New Halen!'.
VH with Gary ('98) - Fucking disaster. WTF was that??
VH with Wolf/Dave ('12-'15) - Amazing comeback. Smokin' album and tours.

I think Back In Black is exceptional. Its best songs are all-time classics, and most hard rock bands from that era would've shit themselves to have written any of the record's "worst" tracks. In fact, had Bon been around to lay down vox for those songs, I think we'd be debating 2-4 instead of the top five.

Highway To Hell is also outstanding.

I like VH1 better than both, but all three are sonic perfection, IMO.

To each his own, I don't like Brian Johnson...at all, his voice is like nails on a chalkboard. I don't know, I find a lot the riffs pretty boring on that album, every song has the same tempo, the same groove. Yeah there's a few good tunes, sure. And yeah I know that's AC/DC fomula, but they did much more interesting stuff with Bon Scott even in that same realm.

I think Back in Black is one of the albums I skip over a lot of songs. At least for me.

And of course the first VH album is better than it. Back in Black appeals to the least common denominator, an album for people who don't like hard rock to say they like a hard rock album.
