I Was Bored - Some Recording Fun

Now everyone knows I don't like Kiss...at all. However, I've always liked "Detroit Rock City" for whatever reason, and I've always wanted to recording some 4-part harmony guitar just to see if I could do it. Well I found a cool backing track of the song with vocals, so I messed around with it tonight.

The first version I did with my Pod X3, I used my normal 5150 tone, and it was just WAY too metal, didn't sound good...too much gain. Awful. So I backed way off the distortion (which always sounds better for recording anyway), used a couple different Marshall patches to try to get a more 70's sound. I actually think it came out really well, kinda shocked myself. I know it's not a tough song, but it was fun to record. I've really never actually tried to learn the song until I did this.

In case anyone cares, I used my Charvel So Cal (Dimarzio Tone Zone) on the left channel, the right is my Warmoth Super Strat (Bareknuckle VH II), and I did the leads on my Warmoth too.

So have a laugh and a listen if you dare.

Edited with updated version on 03.17.10...I got the solo as tight as I can do it.

    Listening now.
    Sounding good man!

How do u like the pod x3?
    Is it the kidney bean?

I use a pod xt kidney bean and think it's great for recording demos.

    Wanna upgrade to the x3.

    Just heard the solo.

    Thanks man, appreciate it.

I had a POD XT, which I actually liked a lot. We did our CD with it, and most people didn't know we didn't use our amps. I didn't actually care for my tone, I thought our singer's was better, next time I'll get mine right.

A buddy of mine at work had the X3 Live (not the kidney the floorboard one), and he wasn't using it and sold it to me for $300. It was practically brand new, so a great deal. It is way nicer and much better sounding than my old XT. Has a lot more cool features, just a better overall sound too. It is a good upgrade if you can afford to do it.

    Welcome!

I was never a Kiss fan but saw them in 1990 and 1996.
    Catchy tune.

I record ideas/demos everyday with the xt bean & think it sounds good, not sure about using it live, have yet to make it sound great through an amp.

Maybe the "live" units are better for that.

I have mine hooked into my computer and can record an idea within seconds.
I also use it to record little videos like this - http://12seconds.tv/v/6WQSI

Yeah I don't like Kiss either, just like that tune.

I tried the XT in practice years ago for the hell of. Sounded like crap I thought. Sounded very sterile and fake. It wasn't the "live" unit but I don't think it would have made much difference.

They are good for recording though.

HAHA nice video, see the Pod works great for that kinds of stuff.

I use it in conjunction with stomp boxes too and that helps the sound sometimes.
Yeah for recording something quick it's great and with some mixing can be pretty decent.

    This demo is all xt.

Sounds good Brett. The only KISS record I ever owned was Destroyer, on 8-track. Bought it off Jeff Twitty for 3 bucks in the 4th grade.

    Nice dive bomb there johnny.

    Thanks Wruff.

See Johnny I think that sounds pretty damn good, and the riffage is cool too.

Is Detroit Rock City on Destroyer? I don't even know. What album is "Calling Dr. Love" on? I kinda like that song too....ok I like TWO Kiss songs.

Oh yeah I owned that Ace Frehley single "New York Groove" on vinyl too. I remember cranking the shit out of that song.

That was really on the money and tight Brett. I was a huge fan in my teens and can remember two great shows at the Garden in the 70s. There is no doubt they were one of the best live bands you could see as they hit you with rock, blood, flames and bombs. And in the early days really gave it there all. Kiss Alive still sounds good to me 30 years later.

Doctor Love was on Rock and Roll Over, and yes Detroit Rock City is on Destroyer. By the time I was 17 it was over for me, but as a youngster I have some great memories.

The funny thing is my brother in law is a semi regular on Gene Simmons Family Jewels and 50% of the show if not more is full of shit as it is all scripted. He plays Tony Roman Genes financial partner and that is not even his real name. In the season closing show he asked Gene to be Godfather to my nieces baby and I was cringing as they had him acting like Marlon Brando in the Godfather the fat bastard.lol. They used his house to shoot that show in and my sister in law was for real but my niece is only 18 and does not even have a boyfriend yet alone a baby and husband. Everyone that was in the church as members of his family were actors. To be honest it caused a war in the family that he did not have his real family there as his wifes was.

To be honest I quite enjoyed it as I dont get along with him and they have him playing a real bufoon which I love, and then about 10 friends call and we rag on him. To be honest he could not even name 2 KISS songs.lol Also strange is that I never had the urge to go over and meet Gene. Maybe if it was 30 years ago.

Outstanding Brett. Sounded dead on to me. Your tone is rich and full.

Hey, can you post some pics of your recording setup? I'd like to get into recording some stuff myself.
