Default Poker Tournament Robbed on Live TV

Action during day 4 at the PokerStars European Poker Tour Berlin €5,000 no-limit hold’em main event came to an abrupt halt today just after 2 p.m. local time, when six armed men stormed into the tournament room. The robbers were only after cash and no one was seriously injured at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Berlin. A police investigation has already begun.

Players, staff, and media members evacuated the tournament room during the 15-minute disturbance, and once security declared that the room was safe again they all returned from the lobby and streets where they had sought safety during the affair. What they returned to was a scattered mess of flipped tables, chairs, and chip stacks that were strewn across the tables that were still standing (pictured right).

EPT Tournament Director Thomas Kremser and his staff worked quickly to bring things back to order and play resumed at 6 p.m. local time with 20 players remaining in the main event. Other tournaments that were disturbed when the incident took place were a €1,000 no-limit hold’em event and the ladies €300 no-limit hold’em event. PokerStars gave players in each of those tournaments the option to take a refund of their buy-in. The €1,000 no-limit hold’em event was eventually canceled.

The cameras of EPT Live were rolling to capture the action at one of the three final tables of the tournament when a commotion and stampede of people was visible in the background. The broadcast was ended soon thereafter and even though the tournament has started again there will be no more EPT Live footage from today’s event.

Here is the official statement about today’s incident at EPT Berlin from EPT spokesperson Kristy Thompson:

“An armed robbery by six men took place today at EPT Berlin. Nobody was seriously injured. We hope to re-start all events at 4pm local time. A police investigation is under way. If you have video footage or photographs that could help the police, please contact the EPT organizers as soon as possible.”

Card Player will keep you up-to-date on any further developments in this story as they are released by tournament officials and law enforcement in Germany

Working in the casino industry, that is a "fear" I have-that one day the place I work will be robbed. The security staff is woefully undertrained, plus would you risk your life if you were making barely more than minimum wage? There is a police force on property, however they are off property most of the time or in the break room the rest of the time. Also the majority of them are Orca fat, so them getting from point A to point B takes an act of Congress. I saw a video where a guy tried to rob a money excahnge and shot the security who put up a fight. I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often.

holding up a card game is a very tricky proposition. It's a lot like holding up a weddding or a stag - you can make out really well, but you better make sure you get in and out without issue. If you don't, then there is a very real chance that you'll end up dead.

The problem is that you're entering a place where you have no idea how many other people are armed, and more importantly you don't know who is armed. Always a recipe for disaster. There was a rumour up here of a little underground poker club where some guys try to hold the place up. 4 armed guys tried. Turns out most of the players were armed. 2 of the robbers were able to escape, no one knows what happened to the other two. I have a guess.

I heard something along those lines happening in Houston awhile back. The door man let them in and they held up the place. No one had guns, so they made off w/a ton of cash. Then the "victims" were in the catch 22 of do they report it and get in trouble in the process or take their lumps.
