    Default What Is Van Halen?

I will try to get to being positive about this band again.

My question to all of you is. What is Van Halen to you? What is it about them that keeps you a fan or made you a fan to begin with?

For me it was all about the music first, from the rythm section to most importantly Eddie's playing, that's why I liked all eras.

Van Halen "was", I can tell you what Van Halen was to me. What Van Halen "is" to me now isn't much, so I keep it to myself, so the folks who live in the "is" can have the playground all to themselves, without having to mingle with folks like me who prefer the "was" to the "is". Y'know?

Fair enough, from around 1983 until, oh we'll say 1998-ish, they were, to me, the greatest rock band in the world, and perhaps my biggest musical source of inspiration. But I am no longer who I "was", and they no longer "are" what they "were".

It's kinda like the girl who was my first crush. She doesn't make me feel today what she made me feel back then. I can remember how she made me feel, but I can't experience those feelings now. I can hear two songs on the radio today that make me remember her, but they won't make me feel what I felt about her when I heard them then.

Memories, you see. The way she "were".

But the man asked for "is", even though he went on to talk about "were".

So, in essence.... they F'in rock! (to me, still)

I didn't really become a VH fan until around the time that I joined this board, last year. I've always been aware of VH, I'd seen them in concert back in 93 or 94, I had a couple of their albums, but about a year ago I just got really into them. To be honest, I don't even recall exactly why. I'm sure if I looked for old posts here I might be able to find out why. But I play guitar and was always more into the shredders like Yngwie, Vinnie Moore, Tony MacAlpine, etc. But for whatever reason, about a year ago, I really just jumped head first into old VH.

Van Halen is the band that makes you declare on 2/23/10 that they are over, that Ed is a puss and you are done with him, then has you starting a hollow thread like this.

    Very well said.

I was thinking of this myself in the past few days. I'm more apt to listen to the likes of Sammy Hagar, Enuff Z'Nuff, Tesla, Extreme, Elvis Presley, Willie Nelson, Dwight Yoakam (to name a few) before I put on a Van Halen disc. VH was such a part of my life for so long. The songs still excite me, but I think I get more pleasure listening to the music of the artists I listed.

Van Halen is the hot girl you once dated and had great sex with then left you for another dude, got fat and is now single, skinny and hot again and wants you back but you are now married and can't do a thing about it.:

Van Halen to me is driving around in the summer time with the windows down and VH 1 or Fair Warning cranked up.
