Default Homeschooling family gets asylum in U.S.

The Romeikes are not your typical asylum seekers. They did not come to the U.S. to flee war or despotism in their native land. No, these music teachers left Germany because they didn't like what their children were learning in public school - and because homeschooling is illegal there.

"It's our fundamental right to decide how we want to teach our children," says Uwe Romeike, an Evangelical Christian and a concert pianist who sold his treasured Steinway to help pay for the move.

Romeike decided to uproot his family in 2008 after he and his wife had accrued about $10,000 in fines for homeschooling their three oldest children and police had turned up at their doorstep and escorted them to school. "My kids were crying, but nobody seemed to care," Romeike says of the incident.

Good for the parents in having the courage to do what they did. Sticking by your beliefs to that extent (leaving your home country) can't be easy but speaks volumes about their character.

an issue like this really speaks to the brass tacks bottom line about the role of government AND citizen in a given society.

I tend to be of the persuasion that we should live in as loose an environment as possible and let everything come out in the wash however I'm also of the opinion that a society has every right and reason to try and create an enact its vision of what a society should be.

A family does and should have every right to raise its young in whatever manner and image they deem fit. A society does and should have every right to maintain congruency and consistency among its citizenry.

There in lies the rub. What happens in a family when the children begin to grow up and don't want to live by mom and dad's rules? What happens when individual citizens get a hair up their ass and decide that various or specific aspects of their society are simply not to their taste. Ignore the rules? Sneak out to that party? Protest? Revolution? Move out? Then what should parents and government do in kind? Ground them? Jail time? Kick them out?

Love it or leave it I suppose.

    http://www.wnd.com/2014/03/supreme-c...olers-packing/

The U.S. Supreme Court has refused to intervene in a lower court’s order that would send a Christian homeschooling family back to Germany to face what the parents describe as persecution by the government because of their beliefs.

But housing and feeding Somalians in Maine on the taxpayers back is okay ...it is absolutely insane.

On Tuesday (3/4), the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) announced a drastic turnaround on the part of the federal government: The German Romeike family, which sought asylum in the United States to home-school their children, will now be allowed to stay in America.

“The Romeikes can stay!!!” the HSLDA announced on its Facebook page.

what a scary precedent you guys just set. All Mexico has to do now is to outlaw homeschooling and you guys are officially screwed.
