    Tube Recommendations

Well after 11 years I finally blew out a tube in my 5150. So I'm gonna replace all 4 power tubes, they're all old anyway.

    What are your suggestions gents?

The general consensus on the board here seems to always lean toward JJ tubes. I've used them in all of my 5150s (original, combo, II) with much success. I've also been quite happy with Electro-Harmonix tubes. I've had terrible experiences with Sovtek tubes. Others have also said Groove Tubes don't work well with the 5150s.

No recommendations but loling cause I feel you. The 5150 is a monster of stability and not 11 years for me LOL but it hangs in there tough and sounds great. I am not surprised and dude I think that rocks! Interested in what tubes people recommend but I usually go with whatever my local tech thinks is best. Sylvania I think was the last but thats not the point I'm making.

yeah avoid groove tubes....not only do they make the amp sound even more harsh but they last about 5 milliseconds! I tried a set of Mullards once, they sounded great, evened out some of the 'buzzsaw' tone of the amp, but again only lasted a few gigs before they went microphonic...so it's back to JJ's...i would recomend them all the way

11 years? I've never even come close to that with the tubes in my 5150.

I like EH and have used them in the past

Currently I'm running Tung Sol in the pre and TADs in the power. I like them a bit better than the EH. The EH I find a bit harsher sounding.

I wouldn't ever use Sovteks again, every one I've used never lasted more than 6 months.

JJ 6L6 power, and either EH or Chinese pre's. EVH was using NOS GE 6L6's and Chinese 12ax7s in his peaveys thru the 90's. he actually bought out Aspen Pittmans entire stock of the NOS GE's in late 91' i believe, and the original 5150's were voiced and came with NOS Phillips 6L6's and the chinese pre's. over the years i got to see his stuff up close many times and also had several conversations with James Brown, who designed the amp. his 5150's were also modded so they could be biased up and were set in the low 30's ma instead of the cold 15ish ma stock amps. people used to always say his 5150's didn't sound like the stock ones. well try this combo and then crank them up like he did and voila. FWIW.

I have JJ's in all 3 of my 5150's. Power and Pre. No other way to go. Reliable, inexpensive, and give you great tone.

The bias mod is a must on the 5150's. I have a clarity mod on one of them, and I cant tell a difference up against the others. I am pretty sure that mod is just preamp tube matching.

Even if I am not replacing with the same brand of tubes?

Just want to make sure, I'm not an amp guru.

You will be fine as long as you stick with 6l6's,it's when you change to a different type el34 ect you will need to re bias and you would need a bias mod.
