Default Stupid Security in Philly Airport

Crap like this really pissed me off. Kudos to the boy's parents for not going nuts on security - I think I would have.

TSA Apologizes For Making Boy Remove Leg Braces
4-Year-Old En Route To Disney World

ORLANDO, Fla. -- One father coming to Orlando from Philadelphia to take his son to Disney World said the Transportation Security Administration went too far.

He said security at the Philadelphia airport forced them to remove his 4-year-old son's leg braces before letting them go through, then forced the child to come through security without his braces by himself.

TSA apologized Tuesday to the boy and his family who were on their way to Orlando to go to Disney World.

Local advocate Carolyn Tavel has two disabled children and is shocked TSA screeners treated a 4-year-old boy wearing leg braces like a terror suspect.

Ryan Thomas, 4, was born four months premature wears braces to support his weak legs. He was excited to board his very first flight en route to Disney World to celebrate his birthday, but one TSA screener said before that could happen he had to remove the braces.

"He can't take them off. He can't walk without them, and the screener made him take the braces off the boy," Philadelphia columnist Daniel Rubin, who has covered TSA troubles at the airport recently, said.

"He was just boiling. He said, 'This is overkill. He's 4 years old. I don't think he's a terrorist and the supervisor said, 'You know why we're doing this,'" Rubin said.

Rubin said as Ryan struggled to walk through security, officers wouldn't let his mom hold his hand.

"They said, 'Absolutely not. You can't go into the metal detector with anyone. He's got to go on his own,'" Rubin said.

TSA's policies said people with disabilities do not have to remove a support brace, and that they can ask for a private screening and can have assistance.

A TSA spokeswoman said the agency is investigation, but won't say if the screener or supervisor has been fired.

Hey we have to be safe. Zero tolerance on terrorism. We can't discriminate based on national original or age or anything like that. Terrorism has many faces. Would you rather a four year old have to take his braces off and crawl through a metal detector or relive another 9/11? This is a small price to pay for national security. Those agents at the airports are well-trained people doing a thankless job and are overwhelmed by the constantly shifting tides in how they are supposed to treat any given situation. They do a great job 99.99% of the time and we only hear when something like this comes up. Damn media.

There...have I covered all the bases?

Unbelievable. Does nobody who overseas airport security at the individual airports have a shred of common sense?

Before 9/11, airport security was terrible now they have programmed the security employees to be mindless zombies just following a protocol in an effort to shore up safety.

    This is a disgrace.

I honestly can't believe the parents did not go nuts. That is some SERIOUS restraint. I don't think I would have been able to restrain myself from going off, if I was that boy's Father.

The term OVERKILL doesn't even come close to describing this incident.

What trouble were they in, to begin with? They were just trying to pass through security. But I hear what you're saying. Don't add to the problem.

But I didn't mean physicallygoing off as they (the security) weren't forcibly doing anything.

I mean verbally. I'd make EVERYBODY in line aware of what the security was doing to my kid.

the agents are at fault here, not the policy. They should have screened the boy (and my guess, because of his age) and one parent separately without requiring him to take off the braces.

they don't like it when people raise their voices or verbally protest the process. In the Miami airport and in the Houston airport they play a recorded message warning people not to make jokes, raise their voices or resist the process and that the consequences involve being detained. It's pretty crazy...but hey, at least we're safe right?

To be perfectly honest they shouldn't even have screened the boy, in my opinion.

    He's 4 years old.

    I'll repeat that: He's 4 years old.

how old do you have to be to be a suicide bomber?

I know that's a retarded question but that's the extreme many people have come to. We see lots of stories about how al quaeda recruits young and takes babies from their parents to reprogram them and all that shit and we hear stories about terror cells in our neighbourhoods so it's not much a stretch for a simpleton to think "shit, zero tolerance means zero tolerance. That kid might be a terrorist!"

Well that's too bad for them. They should have some common sense for a change. If you're going to be a complete dick head, I'm going to call you on it. I don't care if you don't like it. That's how I feel at least.

How much safer are we? Prior to 9/11, we were saying that. After 9/11 we're saying, "hey we can complain but at least we're safe right?"

Problem is too many security personal have NO COMMON SENSE. Guys STILL get on planes with explosives without being detected.

And the US Government responds by trying to do EVERYTHING.

Case and point: You can bring MATCHES on a plane. But you can't bring a zippo.

    Common sense...like Jetguy said....It's free.
