Default Frankie or 5150 - Which one?

    Hey all,

I'm looking to start a new project... Trying to decide between building a Frankie or 5150? Any recommendations and why? Tone? Playability?

Howzabout the 1984 or Hot for Teacher instead? The only reason I bring this up is that a LOT of people have done the Frankie and 5150. With respect to you, and to all the others who have made 5150s and Frankies, stand out and make one of these gems instead.
Eddie must think I'm a BOZO to want to drop THAT much on one of his new Charvel Guitars!

My personal favorite is the 5150, but don't get caught up in the tone or playability as the determining factor. It would be a safe bet that whichever one you chose would not sound as exactly like you would hope. As far as playability, the Kramer modeled action and necks are faster, and at least for me more comfortable due to the wideness and flatness, but with sound, there's so many variables in just about every aspect of each guitar.
Just choose whichever one appeals to you most visually first, then once it's built, you can play around with pickups, spring blocks, etc. to get closer to the sound you want.
She looks so $#@!'n good ,so sexy and so frail....Somethin's got the bite on me, I'm goin' straight to Hell.

yeah check mine out for sale in the "for sale thread" ha ha.... just had to get some cheap advertising there.

I love the 5150s and the Frankies for sure but I always thought that the 1984 and Hot For Teacher guitars just took on a personality of their own. If you want to build one I say go for the 1984. Something different.

good luck on the build. Its always fun.

Thanks Jimi. It's like going into a store a while back, I was checking out some Gretsch Duo Jets. They had three in stock exactly alike, but only one had any real appealing tone. Playability was pretty much the same, but the other two just sounded dead in comparison. You could tell the strings were still fairly new, as there was a brightness to them, but acoustically, there was just no ring to the guitar. I know alot of guys say wood is'nt as important compared to hardware and pickups, but in my mind, this was absolute proof if you needed any that wood/material selection is a HUGE factor in overall tone. Not saying that building a custom one would'nt get you that desired tone, but in say, mass production like the Gretsch's where their carbon copies of each other visually and parts wise, it becomes very apparent when ideal tone properties within the wood itself are lacking. (Moisture content at sealing, the cut, and even glues used). That's the great thing about scratch builds. There's so many resources to get em' sounding good.

    Thanks for the replies,

This will be my first complete parts build so some of the big factors for me are:

Overall difficulty of the build and assembly
Difficulty of the paint job and available research
    Parts availability and price

    Radiohead-
If you need ANY pics of the other guitars, let us know. Jimi typically has the most reference pics out of anyone. What are you considering making?

If those are your factors, I'd suggest the 5150. its still not easy but i got real close on my second attempt and i still see little errors on my red Frank after 5 attempts. parts are readily available or close enough to fake it (actual FR is very rare as is the nut and string retainer). COGs is lower as well.
