Default One of my kits being completed.

A buddy of mine here in Houston got one of my kits and I helped him out with it.

Ran out of big sustain blocks so I had to make this one.

Great job all around, Kyle, but I especially like the manner in which you relic'd the back.

I have a question...How do you do all "relicing" to it? Do you just take a knife and make some dings in it. Im curious because Im thinking about starting a project myself....

I use several different things. Razor blades, dental picks, sand paper, steel wool, drill bits, etc...

Not to de-rail your thread but seeing the grain in your tremolo cavity reminds me that at one time you had a guitar body for sale that had rubbing compound in the grain which brings up a point about Ed's guitar body...

If his body was unsealed or not paint-leveled - as suggested by many - wouldn't you think you would see evidence of compound in the grain? He stated in the Fender Replica video that he used compound after painting it Black & White. I've used it enough to know that it's usually there for good once dried - especially in grooves or scratches. Just wondering how flat his surface actually was…

I can't imagine Ed using anything to fill the grain before he painted it black. I would guess that at most he sanded between coats and also applied the paint pretty heavy. He did say he used compound, but I think that was after the white had been painted and he did it to knock down the edges along the stripes. Then adding red would have made it even smoother. He did clear it before the Guitar World shot in '83 because he said there was a lot of grain showing.

I have used Wax and Grease Remover to get compounds off a body after they have dried.

Sounds logical to me! I guess my portfolio of Frankenstart images is weak compared to yours for example - the guitar finish always seems to be flat - without showing grain. I know Jimi has posted several images that clearly show that it DID have grain. OH well, you friend's guitar looks GREAT - good job!

The Franky did indeed have some grain showing, especially on the sides.
The essential problem is that red does photograph well. The shade can vary greatly and small details are often blurred.
