That's the free show they played in Dallas back in '91. I have the whole DVD, it's a very good show

Apolitical Blues has to be the worst song they've ever recorded. Yeah, even worse than Big Fat Money.

LOL....that's pretty scary. I hadn't even thought of VH3 when I made my post.

I guess by "worst song Van Halen ever recorded" I was talking about...Van Halen. You know, VH1 through Balance.

I agree, A Apolitical Blues is just God awful.

Big Fat Money is smokin' musically, it is just the lyrics are so juvenile. Just ignore Sam on that one, and it rocks!
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

I never, ever liked AB until I heard it played back to back with the original on Elwoods house of Blues (the one where ed and sam sat in and jammed with a couple of acoustic guitars)...I "got it" after I heard that. vh's version is alot like the original which is what they were going for. BFM is a cool song IMO, I like the lyrics....if anything I don't like the solo in the song. I know Ed did it on the fly but it just doesn't fit IMO but the general opinion is that the song sucks so..eh. BTW, they opened the out door show I saw in 95 wtih BFM...ed and sam walked out to center stage. sam's arm around ed and they just started jamming it. it was a cool way to start a show and for a few minutes I thought everything was cool in vh land again-I knew something was off for most of 95 up until that point.

Apolitical Blues is yet another example of Sammy Hagar the wanna be. Sorry I like Sammy, but a bluesman he is not.

I never took AB that seriously, nor did they intend it to be. It's just a goofy jam of the LF tune. To me it's no different than doing Big Bad Bill in a way. It's not great, I'll give you that, but it was just them having fun. I guess I was'nt taken that off guard by it because they were talking and joking about it on the pre album release interview of Rockline, so I knew what to expect. I first heard it on the 45 B side of Black and Blue. it was'nt on the LP and they only included it on the CD because of the extra space. Now BFM........Yeah, I agree. I always advance past that one. The vocal on that one just grates on me. Another one I never liked was The Inside from 5150.
She looks so $#@!'n good ,so sexy and so frail....Somethin's got the bite on me, I'm goin' straight to Hell.

Sadly, there's a lot of Van Hagar material your advice applies to. They really did write quite a bit of great music with Hagar. And I mean that as compliment to Sam too as I believe he had a lot to do with some of the arrangements. It's just his, as you put it, "juvenile" lyrics that overshadow some of the greatness of the music.

Sorry - I have to disagree with the whole way this post has gone...while Sammy does have a few instances where he has not hit it out of the park lyrically - I don't think Big Fat Money is an example of it...these are some pretty good lyrics on a great tune...they are especially not "Juvenile"....

Some say money is bad for the soul
Bad for the rock, bad for the roll
Bad for the heart, bad for the brain
Bad for damn near everything, oh yeah!

Oh. Hey, it must be good for somethin'
    Come on, pay the rent
    (Yes)

    Telephone, telefax, telefuckin' teletrash
Tell a cop, tell a friend, think we hit the stoney end
Nothin' left, nothin' right, now they want a bigger bite
Everybody wants some, everybody wants big money. Oh yeah!
    They want big fat money
That's what I want, big fat money

Too much temptation, 'nuff to kill a generation
    Space station, starvation, premature ejaculation
This ain't groovy, this ain't funky
It's on my back but it ain't my monkey, no! Oh yeah
Gimme some o' that big, big money
That's what I want, big fat money. Yo!
    Big, big money!

Ow! Smoke this, eat that, my old lady's gettin' fat
High rise, high rent, before it's earned it's all been spent
Where's it gonna come from? Who's it gonna go to?
I ain't beatin', but I'm bein' eaten by money. Oh yeah
    Big big money. Woo!
Now gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme!
Some o' that big money. Oh yeah
    That's what I want

Well all right (Big Money) Oh, big big money (Big Money)
Now gimme, gimme, gimme (Big money) some o' that big money (Money). Woo!
    That's what I want
    It's all I need
    Gimme big fat money
    Yeah, I gotta wallet full
    Gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme!
Grab me some a-that big fat money

Yeah, I love the lyrics in the verses to Big Fat Money after I figured out what they were. The music is cool, but pretty basic. I'm not sure how the lyrics and the tone to this one don't match.

There are awful Sammy songs lyrically, this isn't one of them.
