Default Van Halen "The Seventh Seal" Minneapolis 1995 w/ Monks Chanting

I was so happy to finally find YouTube footage of this. When Van Halen played Target Center in Minneapolis in July 1995 they had Tibetan Buddhist monks chanting to open the show and "The Seventh Seal." They'd typically been playing the recorded version from the album. I recall hearing that Sammy had learned of their presence in the city and asked them to come chant to open the show. It was the oddest opening to a Van Halen show I've ever seen and completely unexpected. The lights dimmed, the crowd started cheering loudly, and all of a sudden there was a spotlight on Sammy standing center stage. In the dark background there were a lot of what looked like people in costumes (orange colored robes, in actuality) filing out in a line. Sam said (paraphrasing): "Hey, Minneapolis! The band is still backstage getting ready to come out. Today we found out these Buddhist monks from Tibet were here to do a concert (or something like that). These are the guys who open up our album. They don't even have a country right now. So if you're okay with it, we're going to have them chant for you for a little bit." The monks then proceeded to chant for at least ten minutes; it may have even been longer. All of a sudden Sammy came running around from behind the drum riser, the stage lights went up, and VH kicked into 'Seventh.' It was one of the best rock show openings I've ever seen. The newspaper review of the show the next day reported that one of the monks sat on the side of the stage and watched the entire show.

The audio isn't great, and you only get the end of the chanting. But it was pretty cool.

i remember the first time i heard that song i remember thinking this is the song to open the tour with and that's just what they did.
think i saw them 3 or 4 times that tour, whatever bay area dates they did i was at.
the oakland show was postponed because eddie got busted with a gun on the way up.
that was way b4 we had a computer and were not online although not many people were so we got turned away at the show with signs saying that sammy was sick. they played the show at a later date.

I've got an old VHS bootleg copy of this show. I wonder where that tape is...I may have to go find it. Hell, what am I thinking: I'll have to find a old VCR first.

However, I DO remember this show, and the reason I got the Minneapolis '95 boot was BECAUSE of the Monks' opening.

Who could have known that they were almost at the end there?
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Why they chose to open with RIGHT NOW on part of that tour is beyond me.
    GREAT VIDEO! Thanks
