    Default Finding a Publisher for a Music/Guitar Instruction/Theory Book

I apologize in advance if this is topic doesn't belong.
I really didn't know where else to post it.

My father had been a professional musician and guitar instructor all his life.
He never cared much for the "Mel Bay" style instruction books and would always create his own lesson plans, theory charts, etc ... for his students.
Shorty before he passed away, he had gathered all of these lesson plans and composed his own book. His intent was to have the book published and distributed to schools, music stores, etc ..

Well ... he passed away before he had a chance to have it published and I'd like to persue it, in his behalf.

It's the most complete instructional book I've ever seen, and I really think that it would benifit students and teachers alike.

So do any of you guys have any experience with publishers or know how I can get started with this? I have good intentions, but absolutely no knowledge of what I'm doing when it comes to getting a book published and distributed.

Yeah, this thread probably shouldn't be here to begin with.
And unfortunately, I don't have MSN or ICQ.

I've Googled a few publishers and sent out a couple emails today.
It will certainly be a learning experience.

Dude, I think this thread is totally relevant to the Guitar Room. Hopefully you'll get some decent suggestions and find a few avenues to pursue.

    You could always self publish.

Non-fiction like what you are doing is actually not that tough to publish and make some money off of.

Seems like you have PM's coming your way from people who know more than I, but if you want to know about self publishing let me know, I have some stuff self published and I actually made some coin off of it. Nothing to pay off the mortgage, but it was a nice little bonus.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Preferred pronouns: he/him/his

Hurricane Halen - Let's all gingery touch our sword tips!!!

I can't offer you advice or info but I wish you the best of luck with it Dino.

I think it's awesome your father was such a huge influence and hero to you and that you are working on completing a goal he had set in motion. All the best dude! I hope it comes together and you sell millions. Just completing it in itself will likely feel like a million bucks to you anyways. Peace.

I totally agree on the subject and what you are doing Dino. Can someone who has had experience with publishing written material besides music which I think we all know give Dino advice on how not to get ripped off. I think we have seen many a small guy lay stake to sending in a screenplay and have it sent back only to have it made into a movie with minor changes. I would believe there is a course he should take to safeguard his material so he does not pick up a Hal Leonard or Cherry Lane method book to see it is his fathers work.
