Default Rami and Maguire Leave "Spiderman" Franchise

    Jan 12, 2010 9:52 am US/Eastern Maguire, Raimi Leave 'Spider-Man'LOS ANGELES (AP) ―

Tobey Maguire's web-slinging days are behind him.

The 34-year-old actor and "Spider-Man" director Sam Raimi will not be returning to the superhero franchise next year. Instead, Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios announced Monday that a new "Spider-Man" film based on a script by James Vanderbilt that focuses on Peter Parker in high school would debut in the summer of 2012 with a new cast and filmmaking team.

"I am so proud of what we accomplished with the 'Spider-Man' franchise over the last decade," Maguire said in a statement Monday. "Beyond the films themselves, I have formed some deep and lasting friendships. I am excited to see the next chapter unfold in this incredible story."

The announcement of a reboot comes after reports that "Spider-Man 4" production stalled amid script revisions. The original "Spider-Man 4" release date seemed unlikely last week when Paramount Pictures announced that "Thor," another big-screen Marvel superhero adaptation, had hammered out the same May 6, 2011, release date as the fourth Spidey installment.

"Working on the 'Spider-Man' movies was the experience of a lifetime for me," Raimi, who directed all three "Spider-Man" films, also said in a statement Monday. "While we were looking forward to doing a fourth one together, the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job."

Maguire said in an interview last week that there was "great stuff in terms of story and script" for the fourth chapter and the plan was to still release the film in 2011. He also said he had specific ideas about the evolution of the character on the big screen.

"Thor" experienced its own upheaval over the weekend. Stuart Townsend departed the adaptation because of creative differences, according to two AP sources close to the production. Townsend, who had been cast as an ally of the Norse god, was replaced by Joshua Dallas.

The three "Spider-Man" films continually snared moviegoers, earning over $1.1 billion combined. After glowing reaction to the first two films, critical response to "Spider-Man 3" was so-so. Raimi said he was undecided about returning to the franchise after the third movie but later said he didn't like thinking about somebody else making the Peter Parker story.

Sony said it would have more news about the next "Spider-Man" movie in coming weeks

    Peter Parker in high school?

Well if the FIRST Spiderman in the series showed how Peter became Spiderman, than basically this 4th movie is going to be......what?

I thought Parker was in high school during the other three movies? Or was that college?

Whatever the case, sucks big time. The Spiderman pictures were my favourites of the super hero genre, though the new Batmans have closed a lot of ground.

A reboot, IMO, is a horrible idea. Too soon.

I thought McGuire was perfect with his "aw shucks" routine he does in EVERY movie for the first flick, but hated it in the 2nd.

I'd rather see a part 4 with a new actor, and please, no more Kirsten Dunst. Ever.

Frankly I thought the last two movies sucked, and I'm a HUGE Spider-Man fan...by far my favorite super hero.

only the first one covered his HS years. The rest of the time he was in college....including Curt Connors' (The Lizard) science class.

I had read this online earlier this morning. This SUCKs Thors ****! lol

I LOVE the original cast and the feel of the Spidey movies. It's a rare stroke of luck to get that type chemistry and character that fit the role so perfectly. I was a huge comic book fan as a young kid and Spiderman was right up there.
Tobey was perfect for Spiderman. The movies were all great imo..the last one even with the flurry of sub plots and all that really has some great meat to it.

The emotional moment when Aunt may gives Peter her ring and contrast that to the brutal battles with Venom etc. These movies had heart even when diluted with subplots and scattered story lines. It's a shame to see it end already.

IMO Kristen and Tobey were perfect, fantastic, had great chemistry and still not fully matured in the character(s), Mary Jane was still up and coming/struggling...not famous yet and Spidey was barely comfortable in his super hero role and we will never see that cast mature with the characters. Sucks hard. My bet is the new film will be stunning but lack the heart and charm(which imo is why they were so good).

Well looking forward to Iron Man 2. Marvel did well with that one also.

Damn shame to leave the franchise hanging after the end of #3. While the relationship was repaired, you could tell there was still some healing to be done with Pete and MJ.

And the introduction of the Staceys is kinda useless now. Fans of the comics know what was coming for both of them. Was really hoping to see their stories play out on the big screen.

They want to make Spiderman 4 into a teen movie? Raimi did an awesome job on the first two flicks. They should just leave it at that.

As successful as the franchise has been, why do a re-boot now? Doesn't make sense.

Star Trek re-boot made sense, but this, hell no.

Tobey Maguire was the worst superhero ever. So I am very happy about this news. I am glad to hear Kirsten Dunst is gone too. I just hope they make a better choice in the casting this time.

I loved the first Spiderman, great great movie. The second two were really bad. Raimi went over board with the cheese. Spiderman is one of the most interesting and multi-dimensional superheroes ever and the third movie in particular really missed the mark. I'm good with them moving on.

Spidey 3 was definitely not a great film, but it is way to early to reboot this franchise. They just flushed it down the toilet, although I hope I am proven wrong.

the idea of "rebooting" it doesn't really bother me. Look at the comics these superhero movies are based on. It's commonplace to have several titles featuring the same characters running concurrently but done by different artists and writers and having completely different themes and feels. Throw in the graphic novels that come out and you have even more people's attempts at looking at the same characters through different lenses. I dont' see why movies should be any different. For those that like the vibe of the Maquire Spiderman, those movies will always exist. Let's see what the new team comes up with. They could be great! They could suck and if they do, well, I guess we're no better or worse off than we are right now, having had to sit through that last crappy spiderman movie.

Then again, Spiderman 3 gave us this incredibly gorgeous woman:

Bryce Dallas Howard...who I am now going to place in the "women who I think are way hotter than they get credit for" thread.
